SOCCER

Consol girls beat Bryan in second OT period: The A&M Consolidated girls soccer team scored in the second overtime period to beat Bryan 2-1 in the Crosstown Showdown at Veteran's Park on Tuesday.

Taylor Pounds scored to give Consol (9-4-2, 3-1 in District 13-5A) a 1-0 halftime lead.

Bryan (6-8, 2-2) answered in the 74th minute when Kylie O'Connor scored off an assist by Savannah Greenwood.

The game remained tied at 1 after the first 10-minute overtime period, but Consol's Jessica Brown scored the go-ahead goal on a cross from Natalie Pantel in the second overtime.

The Consol JV won 3-0. Sol Medina scored twice, and Lauren Allen had one goal. Morgan Anderson, Suzanne Baker and Vicky Wilhelm recorded assists.

Bryan will host Killeen Ellison at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday. Bryan's JV Blue will start at 4 p.m. against Waco University.

Consol will host Temple at 6 p.m. Friday.

Navasota loses close game to Waller: NAVASOTA -- The Navasota Lady Rattlers fell to Waller 2-1 at Brule Field on Tuesday. Cailey McLain scored for Navasota (0-7) while goalkeeper Sarah Jarvis had 18 saves.

Navasota plays at Brenham on Friday.

BASEBALL

Aggie named to preseason All-America team: BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Texas A&M senior Blake Stouffer was named to the Rivals.com Preseason All-America first team as a second baseman Monday.

Last season, Stouffer was a consensus All-America selection and first-team All-Big 12 and all-region pick, hitting .385 with 12 home runs, 85 RBI and a .668 slugging percentage while swiping 22 bases. His 102 hits and 23 doubles in 2007 ranked third all-time on the school's charts.

Stouffer joins Texas' Kyle Russell as the only Big 12 representatives on the Rivals.com first team. Baylor shortstop Beamer Weems and Missouri pitcher Aaron Crow were named to the second team.

Texas A&M opens the season Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. when the Aggies host Northern Colorado at Olsen Field. Season and individual-game tickets are available by calling 888-99-AGGIE or by logging on to www.aggieathletics.com.

Blinn sweeps doubleheader: BRENHAM -- The Blinn College baseball team beat Trinity University in a doubleheader at Leroy Dreyer Field on Tuesday.

Blinn won the opener 5-0. Trenton Irwin threw all seven innings, allowing four hits. Tyler Coppock hit a home run while Trey Johnson and Layton Hiller both went 2 for 3, including a double for Johnson.

Blinn won the second game 15-1 in five innings. Brandon Finken earned the win.

BASKETBALL

Consol to take part in playoff preview: The A&M Consolidated boys basketball team will play the Houston Yates Lions (22-2) at the Second Annual High School Playoff Preview at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Forest Brook High School's Mark Anthony Pavillion.

Yates, the state's top-ranked Class 4A team, is ranked fifth nationally by USA Today and No. 3 by Rivals.com.

Also at the Preview, Smiley will face Aldine Eisenhower at 5 p.m. followed by Huntsville vs. Houston Homeschool Christian Youth Association at 6:30 p.m. Wheatley will face Whitehouse at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the warm-up are only $5 for all four games.

GOLF

A&M women climb to fifth: PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- The 25th-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team shot 298 on Tuesday to climb into fifth place at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club. The final round is Wednesday.

Danielle McVeigh and Lauren Johnson led the Aggies' charge with 1-over-par 72s. McVeigh played her last 14 holes at even-par while Johnson shot 1-under on the back nine.

With a two-round total of 602, the Aggies are 16 shots behind No. 3 Southern California, which leads at 586.

Individually, McVeigh is tied for 12th (75-72--147) while Johnson is tied for 15th (76-72--148). A&M's Ashley Freeman is tied for 34th (75-78--153), Sarah Zwartynski is tied for 43rd (78-77--155) and Miranda Orr is tied for 50th (80-77--157).

POWERLIFTING

Navasota wins District 23-3A invitational: GIDDINGS -- The Navasota boys varsity team won the District 23-3A powerlifting invitational meet Saturday.

Jared Sanders won the 132-pound weight class after lifting a total of 1,120 pounds. Neil Kasper (220) lifted 1,380 pounds, while Dewon Davis (275) lifted 1,270 pounds and Scott McDuffie (275+) lifted 1,170 pounds to win their respective weight classes for Navasota.

Earning second-place finishes for Navasota were: Ben Wilson (165; 1,100), Jamel Thomas (181; 1,135) and Otis Greenwood (242; 1,280). John Acosta (123; 710) took third. Josh Busa (165; 995), Juan Nunez (220; 1,155) and Brian Vizuet (114; 560) all finished fourth and Gaston Lamascus (148; 900) was fifth for the Rattlers.

Navasota's Alexie Holiday took second in the girls' 165-pound class by lifting a total of 575 pounds. In the 220+ class, Chanel Mallard finished second at 805 pounds, and Ariel Chatman lifted 670 pounds for third.

Navasota also won the boys JV meet. Adam Zaragoza (123; 635), K.C. Seigler (148; 820), Xavier Franklin (165; 985), Eric Bennett (181; 1,080), Nathan Mallard (198; 1,010) and Cruz Rodriguez (220; 1,095) all had wins in their respective weight classes. Malcolm Spriggs (165; 910), Adrian Ewing (181; 1,035) and JaMarcus Hester (220; 1,115) all took second while Kesnick Jones (181; 1,020) took third.

SOFTBALL

Bryan shuts out Waco: Bryan needed only five innings to beat Waco 13-0 to open the season Tuesday night.

Courtney Ford (1-0), Jennifer Kasper, Michelle Stratta and Allison Ricke all pitched for Bryan. They combined for nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits without issuing a walk.

Ashley Lara went 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and four RBIs to lead Bryan. Kaitlyn Hathcox went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Kristin Lara went 2 for 3 with three runs. Jennifer Saxby hit two doubles and scored a run, and Calli Wood had a double, scored three runs and had an RBI.

The Lady Vikings will play San Antonio Reagan in the BCS Tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lady Viking Field.

Consol falls in extra innings: KATY -- The A&M Consolidated Lady Tigers opened their season with a 2-1 loss to No. 5 Katy Cinco Ranch in eight innings Tuesday.

Consol's Jessica Chastka pitched 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine with one walk.

Consol's Ashley Heritage and Casie Westbrook each had two hits while Sarah Allison, Emma Gaskin and Summer Groholski each had one hit. Westbrook and Gaskin both hit doubles with Gaskin's plating the only Consol run.

The Consol JV team tied Cinco Ranch 1-1.

The Lady Tigers will play in the BCS Tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Round Rock McNeil/Conroe Oak Ridge winner.

A&M opens home schedule against Sam Houston: The third-ranked Texas A&M softball team will host Sam Houston State at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Aggies' home opener at the Aggie Softball Complex.

Sam Houston State (2-0) opened its season with a pair of 13-0 shutouts over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. Brandi Crnkovic tossed the third perfect game in Sam Houston State history, and the Bearkats tied a school record with four home runs in one game.

A&M opened its season by going 4-1 at the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif., over the weekend.

In conjunction with Valentine's Day, fans who attend Wednesday's game will have the chance to win gift certificates to various local restaurants courtesy of the A&M athletics department.

VOLLEYBALL

A&M's Black tabbed AVCA All-American -- Texas A&M volleyball player Kelsey Black is one of 32 players to be named to the AVCA High School Senior All-America Team, the American Volleyball Association announced Tuesday.

Black, who enrolled at A&M in January, led Amarillo High School to back-to-back Texas 5A high school state titles in her final two years. Amarillo finished last season 43-1 and ranked No. 2 in the nation.
