BASEBALL

Aggies take on McNeese State: The Texas A&M baseball team will play host to McNeese State on Tuesday in the first of two mid-week games between the teams at Olsen Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. WTAW (1620 AM) has the radio coverage.

The series will conclude at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

A&M opened the season last weekend by splitting a four-game home series against Northern Colorado, bouncing back after losing a Saturday doubleheader to win Sunday.

The Cowboys of McNeese State, members of the Southland Conference, are 0-3 after being swept in their opening series at Louisiana Tech last weekend.

A&M leads the all-time series against McNeese 23-5 and has won the last seven meetings.

Sophomore Shane Minks (1-0) is expected to start for the Aggies in the opener against McNeese. Former A&M Consolidated left-hander Tyler Davis (0-1) is expected to start for the Cowboys on Wednesday.

Langwell earns honor: Former A&M Consolidated pitcher Matt Langwell of Rice has been chosen as Conference USA pitcher of the week to start the season.

Langwell, a junior right-hander, helped the Owls salvage the third game of their series at Long Beach State. He allowed three hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings Sunday.

Blinn beats Concordia twice: AUSTIN -- The Blinn Bucaneers swept a junior college doubleheader from Concordia on Monday, winning 10-7 and 10-6.

The Bucs (9-10) will host McLennan College at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Rudder wins three: The Rudder softball team went 2-1 over the weekend against JV squads before beating Thrall's varsity on Monday.

Rudder beat the Caldwell JV 7-6 on Friday. Jazz Roberson and Annamarie Fazzino went 2 for 4 to help pitcher Kadee Plagens earn her second win of the season.

The Rangers played in the Galena Park Tournament on Saturday, where they split a pair of games. Plagans moved to 3-0 as Rudder beat North Shore's JV 9-2. Roberson went 2 for 3 to pace the offense.

La Porte's JV handed the Rangers an 8-7 defeat later Saturday. Fazzino took the loss despite helping herself at the plate. She was 2 for 3.

Rudder bounced back with a 16-0 thrashing of Thrall on Monday. Clagans improved to 4-0 in the circle as Kimi Stringfellow, Chelsie Holliday, Amy Loke, Kayli Morsko and Roberston each had two hits.

The Rangers travel to Bremond on Friday to take on the Tigers.

Navasota second at Elgin Tournament: Navasota went 5-2 over the weekend and picked up a second-place trophy at the Elgin Tournament.

The Rattlers began the weekend with a 6-5 loss to Caney Creek on Friday. Hannah Piper went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs for Navasota.

A 12-1 victory over Mineral Wells on Saturday in the Elgin Tournament opener go the Rattlers on track. Erin Garcia drove in two runs, while Amanda Douglas was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Against Gatesville, Navasota's Erin Garcia allowed just one hit through six innings but didn't get support from the Rattlers' offense. Navasota scratched out a run in the seventh under international tie breaker rules when Erin Garcia singled to score Laura Meekins. The Rattlers clinched a 1-0 victory in the bottom of the inning when a Gatesville runner was thrown out at home.

Garcia couldn't produce a repeat performance against Waco Robinson later Saturday in the championship game. Robinson blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 6-0 victory.

TRACK & FIELD

Bryan JV, freshmen compete in meet: The Bryan JV and freshman track teams recently competed in a meet in Bryan, with both featuring several medalists.

The JV squad finished third overall, with three relay teams taking gold medals. Ben Levy, Lino Byrd, Malcolm Spriggs and Byron Moore won the 4x100 meter relay, while Byrd, Spriggs, Xavier Franklin and James Brown teamed up to capture the 4x200. Levy, Byrd, Franklin and Brown won the 4x400 relay.

Chello Byrd won the 400, while Moore finished third in the 100.

Antron Harris was second in the long jump, while James Brown took third in the triple jump. Dominic Williams was third in both the shot put and discus.

The Vikes' freshman team finished fourth. Antwon Burrell, KJ Nelms, Arron Collins and Damion Mallard won the 4x200 relay, and Tevin Creeks, Burrell, Nelms and Collins took first in the 4x400. Mallard, Collins, Nelms and Burrell also won silver in the 4x100. Individually, Colins was second in the 400.

Nelms won the triple jump, while Creeks and Ian Day tied for second in the high jump. Mallard finished third in the shot put, and Michael Nava took bronze in the discus.
