FOOTBALL
Former A&M offensive coordinator hired at South Alabama: MOBILE, Ala. -- Les Koenning Jr., who was Texas A&M's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for five seasons, has been hired to the same posts by South Alabama, head coach Joey Jones announced Friday.
The 48-year-old Koenning came to A&M from Alabama in 2003 as part of former Aggie coach Dennis Franchione's staff. Franchione stepped down from the head coaching position after the Texas game in November.
Also on Friday, former A&M special teams and tight ends coach Mark Tommerdahl joined the staff at Louisiana-Monroe in the same capacity, ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie announced. Tommerdahl also was part of Franchione's Alabama staff that came over to A&M.
BASEBALL
Cy-Fair beats Consol: CONROE -- The A&M Consolidated baseball team lost to Cy-Fair 10-2 in the Mike Ferrell Invitational on Friday.
The Tigers (4-5), who opened the Invitational with two wins Thursday, will complete pool play against Tomball at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

GOLF
Bryan boys lead Heart of Texas Classic: WACO -- The Bryan boys golf team shot 310 to take an eight-stroke lead at the Heart of Texas Classic on Friday.
Individually, David Buchheit is tied for second individually after posting a 2-over par 74 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. Also for Bryan, Lane Hudson shot 77, Sam Destefano 79, Cody Meier 80 and Garrett Maliska 84.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. Saturday.
GYMNASTICS
Consol girls second at meet: The A&M Consolidated girls gymnastics team finished second behind Kingwood in Bryan's Viking Invitational on Friday.
Abbie Thompson led the Lady Tigers with a fourth-place finish in the all-around that included third place in the vault and on the uneven parallel bars.
Elyssa Trejo was sixth in the all-around after taking fourth in the floor exercise and sixth on the balance beam. Jesse Drummond took fourth in the vault and ninth in the all-around, while Lena Serhan was 10th on balance beam.
SOCCER
A&M faces Mexico U20 national team: The Texas A&M women soccer team will host the Mexico U20 National Team at 11 a.m. Saturday in an exhibition match at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Tickets prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children high school age and under. A&M students with a sports pass will be admitted free of charge.
Navasota gets district win: Carlos Barron's hat trick highlighted Navasota's 4-3 victory over Montgomery in District 19-4A boys soccer action Friday.
David Castillo added a goal for Navasota, while Cruz Rodriquez, Emmanuel Sanchez and Oscar Barron led on defense. Edgar Regaldo recorded 10 saves in goal for Navasota.
SOFTBALL
A&M opens Classic with two shutouts: COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Megan Gibson and Rhiannon Kliesing combined for 13 shutout innings to lead the second-ranked Texas A&M softball team past No. 19 DePaul 8-0 and Georgia Tech 2-0 on Friday at the 2008 NFCA Leadoff Classic.
After surrendering a leadoff single to start the game, Gibson retired 18 straight DePaul batters to earn her 10th win in 10 starts. Gibson tied her season high with eight strike outs in six innings of work.
Against Georgia Tech (5-10), the Aggies (20-2) didn't score until the top of the fifth, but Kliesing needed little run support. The freshman struck out a season-high 10 with no walks, earning her sixth win in six starts.
A&M will face Florida State at 12:30 p.m. and UMass at 3 p.m. Saturday in Day 2 of the Leadoff Classic.
Consol advances to semifinals: CORPUS CHRISTI -- A&M Consolidated advanced to the semifinals of the Mira's Sportings Goods Bash by the Bay Tournament after beating Corpus Christi Carroll 7-0 in the Platinum Bracket on Friday. In the early game, the Lady Tigers closed out pool play with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Flour Bluff (1-6).
Summer Groholski improved to 3-2 in the circle against Flour Bluff, allowing no hits and striking out eight in the three-inning game.
Against CC Carroll (8-4), the Lady Tigers hit five doubles. Heritage had two and Jordan Berry, Sydney Parks and Casie Westbrook each hit one. Jessica Chastka (6-4) struck out seven and gave up one hit in five innings.
Consol (10-6) will face New Braunfels in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bryan girls lose twice: FORT BEND -- The Bryan softball team dropped a pair of games in the Fort Bend Elkins tournament Friday.
Pearland edged the Lady Vikings 3-2 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and then Brazoswood beat Bryan 5-0 on a one-hitter.
Kristin Lara had Bryan's only hit against Brazoswood and she went 2 for 2 on the day with a double and an RBI in the first game.
Bryan (7-4) will play two games at Elkins High School on Saturday, facing Tomball at 3 p.m. and the host team at 5 p.m.

SWIMMING & DIVING
Aggie women move ahead of Texas by 171 points: AUSTIN -- Led by juniors Triin Aljand and Julia Wilkinson, Texas A&M increased its lead Friday at the Big 12 Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
Aljand won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.31 seconds, while Wilkinson won the 100 backstroke (52.70). Both times were meet and conference records.
A&M's Marissa Jasek, Wilkinson, Sarah Woods and Aljand won the 200 freestyle relay in a meet-record 1:29.74.
A&M's Christine Marshall won the 200 freestyle (1:45.48), while Melissa Hain won the 400 individual medley (4:11.74) and Alia Atkinson won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.68).
Defending champ A&M has 687 points heading into Saturday's final events, while Texas has 516.
TENNIS
Pollock clinches match in upset of Duke: DURHAM, N.C. -- Veteran play by Conor Pollock led the 25th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team to its first road win of the season Friday as the Aggies upset No. 10 Duke 4-3 upset at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Pollock (5-2) clinched the match for the Aggies by beating David Goulet in three sets. It marked A&M's first win over a top 10 opponent under second-year head coach Steve Denton.
A&M (4-3) will face No. 16 Florida State (7-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Tallahassee, Fla.

A&M women to host Wake Forest: The Texas A&M women's tennis team will host No. 19 Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
TRACK & FIELD
A&M's Reid wins Big 12 long jump: LINCOLN, Neb. -- Texas A&M freshman Julian Reid won the long jump on Day 1 of the Big 12 Indoor Championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, leaping a season-best 25 feet, 5 1/2 inches in the third round.
The A&M women advanced a conference-high 14 athletes to Saturday's finals, while the Aggie men tied Nebraska and Texas Tech with nine athletes advancing to finals.
The defending team champion A&M women are currently eighth in the team standings. Nebraska leads at 49.50 points.
A&M's men are tied for fifth place with Kansas in team scoring at 14 points. Colorado holds the men's lead with 34 points.
