SPORTS IN BRIEF

Leinart joins Texans; Revis agrees with Jets

HOUSTON -- Matt Leinart has agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, according to agent Tom Condon.

Leinart was cut by Arizona on Saturday.

The Texans were looking for insurance at backup quarterback after Dan Orlovsky threw two interceptions in Houston's last preseason game last week.

In New Jersey, Darrelle Revis rejoined his New York Jets teammates on Monday after agreeing to a four-year deal and ending his holdout.

Revis was expected to officially sign his deal -- reportedly worth $46 million, including $32 million guaranteed -- later Monday. He'll likely practice Tuesday and be ready to play in the season opener next Monday against Baltimore.

Rangers' slide continues; Cubs get win vs. Astros

Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer, Aaron Hill had a two-run shot and the Blue Jays beat Texas 7-2 Monday in Toronto, handing the reeling Rangers their fourth straight loss and seventh defeat in nine games.

In Chicago, Geovany Soto hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning for the Cubs' first lead of the game and closer Carlos Marmol shut down the Houston Astros in the ninth, giving Chicago a 5-4 victory.

Djokovic eliminates Fish in U.S. Open 4th round

NEW YORK -- What could have been a great day for American tennis instead turned into a dominating afternoon for Novak Djokovic.

The third-seeded Djokovic routed No. 19-seeded American Mardy Fish, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 Monday, sapping the energy from both his opponent and nearly packed Arthur Ashe Stadium and leaving only one American man in the draw at the U.S. Open -- No. 20 Sam Querrey.

Later Monday, five-time champion Roger Federer beat 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. On the women's side, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki frustrated Maria Sharapova in a 6-3, 6-4 victory to advance to the final eight.

U.S. team cruises to win at World Championship

ISTANBUL -- Chauncey Billups scored 19 points, Kevin Durant had 17 and the United States powered into the quarterfinals of the world championship with a 121-66 victory over Angola on Monday.

With Durant scoring 17 and Billups 16 in the first half, the Americans saved their most impressive performance in Istanbul for the knockout round.

The U.S. shot 18 of 38 from 3-point range, one off the team record for 3s in a world championship game.

Eric Gordon and Rudy Gay also scored 17 for the Americans, who will face Russia on Thursday at a time to be determined later.
