Third & Short for March 4

Major League Baseball

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies first base coach Davey Lopes has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and team officials said he was expected to make a full recovery.

The former Milwaukee Brewers manager will have surgery later this month at the Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and is expected to miss six weeks after that.

Lopes' cancer was found after he went through a routine examination with the rest of the coaching staff on Feb. 12, two days before pitchers and catchers reported to camp.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Noah Lowry walked nine of the first 12 hitters he faced Monday in the San Francisco Giants' 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings.

Lowry threw 24 pitches before a Texas hitter took a swing. He went through the order once without an official at-bat -- along with the walks, Ben Broussard and David Murphy hit sacrifice flies.

Lowry has walked 12 hitters in 2 1/3 innings this spring and has an ERA of 23.14.

NFL

Randy Moss will get more opportunities to set records and perhaps win a championship in New England.

The veteran wide receiver, coming off a record 23-touchdown catches during the Patriots' unbeaten regular season, re-signed Monday, getting a three-year deal worth $27 million, his agent said. The signing was confirmed by the team shortly after Moss posted a message to fans on his Web site.

Moss' agent, Tim DiPiero, said the deal included guarantees of $15 million, with a $12 million signing bonus to the 31-year-old receiver who helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl in his first season with the team.

Ben Roethlisberger, who quarterbacked the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory in just his second NFL season, signed an eight-year contract extension that pays him $102 million, including $36 million guaranteed.

The signing came on the same day the New York Jets unveiled an ex-Steeler, 31-year-old guard Alan Faneca, who got $21 million guaranteed on a five year, $40 million contract. The Jets also signed linebacker Calvin Pace away from Arizona and offensive lineman Damien Woody away from Detroit.

In addition to re-signing Roethlisberger, the Steelers signed running back Mewelde Moore from Minnesota. He's expected to be their third-down back.

Atlanta released running back Warrick Dunn, who had asked to be let go after the Falcons signed Michael Turner on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Dunn averaged only 3.2 yards a carry, but joined the 10,000-yard club last season. For his 11-year career in Tampa and Atlanta, he has 2,484 carries for 10,179 yards and 47 touchdowns, along with 463 receptions for 4,009 yards and 15 TDs.

Tennessee, meanwhile, added one of Dunn's former Falcons teammates, tight end Alge Crumpler.

The Super Bowl champion Giants signed veteran safety Sammy Knight, who played for Jacksonville last season. He will replace Gibril Wilson, who signed with Oakland.

NBA

HOUSTON -- Yao Ming underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot on Monday.

Houston Rockets team doctor Tom Clanton and Dr. Bill McGarvey performed the surgery on the All-Star center Monday morning.

Clanton has said the surgery would involve placing screws across the bone to hold it together with a recovery time of about four months. Doctors do not expect the injury to keep Yao from playing for China in the Olympics in Beijing in August.

College Basketball

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Nolan Richardson says he is talking with Arkansas State officials about the school's basketball coaching vacancy.

Richardson has been out of college coaching since being fired by Arkansas in 2002. He made his remarks after a luncheon Monday in North Little Rock.

The job has been open since Dickey Nutt resigned two weeks ago. Arkansas State spokesman Jerry Scott said the athletic department had no comment on potential candidates.

Women's College Basketball

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Renee Montgomery scored 21 points and Maya Moore added 19 as No. 1 Connecticut beat No. 4 Rutgers 66-46 on Monday night to win the Big East regular season championship.

Tina Charles added 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Huskies, who won their second straight regular season championship and 13th in the last 15 seasons.

Connecticut (29-1, 15-1) earned the top seed in the conference tournament that starts Saturday. Rutgers (24-5, 14-2) will be the No. 2 seed.

NEW YORK -- Kia Wright scored 14 points and feisty, undersized St. John's stunned the ninth-ranked Irish 61-51, the second straight time the Red Storm upset a highly ranked Notre Dame team at its on-campus home.

St. John's (16-13, 7-9) has won four of five, the only loss to top-ranked Connecticut when coach Kim Barnes Arico suspended six players for violating an unspecified team policy.

Ashley Barlow had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Irish (23-7, 11-5), who had won eight of nine.

WNBA

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Storm have signed former WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes to a contract for the 2008 season.

Swoopes, 37, has been with the Houston Comets during the franchise's entire 10-year history and helped lead the team to the WNBA's first four league championships. She had back surgery to relieve nerve pressure in September.
