Third & Short for April 7

NBA

Rockets 105, Clippers 79: LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Aaron Brooks came off the bench to score 18 points, five teammates reached double figures, and the Houston Rockets beat the short-handed Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night to clinch a playoff berth.

Rookie Luis Scola scored 16 points, Luther Head added 15, Tracy McGrady had 13 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, Bobby Jackson had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Shane Battier scored 11 for the Rockets, who shot 48.1 percent and outrebounded the Clippers 51-33.

Spurs 72, Trail Blazers 65: PORTLAND, Ore. -- Tim Duncan had 27 points and 11 rebounds and San Antonio won its 12th straight against Portland.

Manu Ginobili's dunk with 1:31 left all but sealed it for the Spurs, who handed the Blazers their fifth consecutive loss. Ginobili finished with 10 points and six assists.

Mavs 105, Suns 98: PHOENIX -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 32 points and the Dallas Mavericks rallied from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit for a crucial victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

Josh Howard added 24 and Brandon Bass 19 for the Mavericks, who used a smothering defense in a 16-0 run that put them ahead for good in a game the Suns had led nearly throughout.

College Basketball

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Texas assistant coach Ken McDonald will take over as head coach at Western Kentucky.

McDonald replaces Darrin Horn, who left last week to become the head coach at South Carolina.

Major League Baseball

SAN FRANCISCO -- The federal government's top steroid investigator has asked to meet with Jose Canseco to speak to the former slugger about Roger Clemens.

Canseco's lawyer, Robert Saunooke, told The Associated Press on Sunday that IRS agent Jeff Novitzky called him last week and said he wanted to discuss a photograph that allegedly shows Clemens at a pool party at Canseco's home in 1998.

Tennis

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Nikolay Davydenko's grunts became a little louder in the last game Sunday, and the extra effort helped him finish off Rafael Nadal in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open.

With a 6-4, 6-2 victory, Davydenko became the first Russian to win the Key Biscayne men's championship.

The title is Davydenko's first this year. He's 19-5 in 2008 while playing under the cloud of an ATP investigation into heavy wagering on a match he lost last August at an obscure tournament in Poland.
