Third & Short for March 22

NFL

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Seattle linebacker Lofa Tatupu and the Seahawks agreed Friday to a $42 million contract extension that could keep him as the leader of Seattle's defense through 2015. It also keeps Tatupu from becoming a free agent after the 2009 season.

The deal reworks the final two years on the original contract he signed after being selected in the second round out of USC in 2005, plus six more years worth a potential $42 million.

The Seahawks were already pressed against their salary cap for 2008. Seattle president Tim Ruskell said it took Tatupu's defensive mates Patrick Kerney, Deon Grant, Jordan Babineaux and Craig Terrell restructuring their contracts to get the new deal done for the defense's beloved signal caller.

"I owe them a dinner, to say the least," Tatupu said, laughing.

Seattle running back Shaun Alexander is in talks with the Seahawks about what to do next, his agent Jim Steiner said. Seattle has signed free agent running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, and if Alexander doesn't accept a pay cut, Seattle could cut him June 1 and spread the ensuing $6.9 million salary cap hit over two years.

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with record-setting kicker Jason Elam, who is leaving Denver after 15 seasons.

A person familiar with the negotiations, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been officially announced, said Friday the 37-year-old Elam would be joining the Falcons.

The NFL Network reported Elam settled for a four-year, $9 million contract that includes $3.3 million in guaranteed money.

Elam had been the Broncos kicker since 1993, but he's coming home in a sense. He played high school football in suburban Atlanta.

PITTSBURGH -- The estranged girlfriend of former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Cedrick Wilson denies that he punched her at a suburban restaurant this week.

Lindsey Paulat said Wilson got upset but only shoved her when he saw her drinking Wednesday night.

"He never punched. He pushed me in the side of the head," Paulat told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Friday. "It was misconstrued apparently by the people around us."

In a criminal complaint, Northern Regional police said Wilson pushed Paulat on the shoulder and, when she turned around, punched her in the face. Wilson, 29, is charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. He remains free on $10,000 bail.

College Baseball

Texas Tech 7, Texas 5: LUBBOCK -- Tanner Rindels hit a home run and drove in three RBIs to lead Texas Tech to a 7-5 victory over Texas on Friday.

The Red Raiders overcame a three-run deficit with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Rindels struck the biggest blow, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth. An inning later, he picked up another RBI on a bunt single.

Also driving in runs for the Red Raiders (11-9, 2-3 Big 12) were Chris Hall, Jason Seefeld, Monk Kreder and Taylor Ashby.

A.J. Ramos gave up four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The win went to James Leverton (1-2), who pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Zach Stewart picked up his third save.

Kenn Kasparek allowed three runs on four hits in five innings for Texas (15-6, 3-2). The loss went to Chance Ruffin (2-1).

Nebraska 4, Oklahoma 2: LINCOLN, Neb. -- Craig Corriston hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Nebraska a 4-2 victory over Oklahoma on Friday.

Sooners reliever Ryan Duke had gotten Jake Opitz to fly out and struck out Mitch Abeita before Nick Sullivan reached on an infield single. Corrison then launched a 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season.

Nebraska (16-3, 4-0 Big 12) had tied it 2-2 in the seventh after loading the bases against OU starter Jeremy Erben. Sullivan greeted Duke (3-2) with a two-run single through the left side.

Oklahoma (17-6, 0-1) led 2-0 after J.T. Wise's sacrifice fly in the third inning and Aljay Davis' single in the fifth.

Jake Mort had three hits for Nebraska.

Zach Herr (2-0) got the win in relief of Johnny Dorn. Herr allowed only one baserunner in 1 2/3 innings. Dorn worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks, striking out three.

Erben went six innings, giving up four hits and two runs, one earned. He walked two and struck out four.

Missouri 7, Baylor 0: COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Aaron Crow threw a complete game three-hitter for Missouri, which beat Baylor 7-0 on Friday.

Crow (5-0) struck out 10 and walked three in the shutout.

Aaron Senne went 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs for the Tigers (16-2, 1-0 Big 12). Trevor Coleman, Steve Gray and Kurt Calvert batted in a run apiece.

Baylor starter Kendal Volz (3-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs, four earned, over four innings. Volz struck out five and walked four.

Ben Booker, Adam Hornung and Dustin Dickerson accounted for all of Baylor's hits.

The Bears (13-5, 2-2) committed three errors, to Missouri's two.

MLB

Marlins 8, Astros 3: KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Houston ace Roy Oswalt allowed his most hits of the spring with 10, giving up four runs and walking two with three strikeouts in an 8-3 preseason loss to Florida on Friday.

"I don't think it's good," Oswalt said of his five-inning performance. "But we wanted to throw 100 pitches, and though I got through it quicker than I wanted to, we got 100 pitches."

Houston's Jose Cruz Jr. continued to make a strong case for making the team with a double and a home run.
