IRVING -- Dallas Cowboys fullback FB Deon Anderson will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is out at least a couple of weeks, the team announced Wednesday. Anderson is the only fullback on the roster.
Meanwhile, receiver Sam Hurd (left ankle) and right guard Kyle Kosier (sprained right foot), both hurt in the preseason, took part Wednesday in practice, a light workout without pads. It is possible both could play Sunday.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings are benching quarterback Tarvaris Jackson in favor of Gus Frerotte.
Coach Brad Childress said Wednesday that Frerotte will start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Jackson started the first two games, both losses. He completed just 51 percent of his passes in those starts.

Brewers 6, Cubs 2: CHICAGO -- The Milwaukee Brewers overcame the loss of injured starter Ben Sheets and, boosted by Prince Fielder's three-run double, beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 Wednesday night to end a five-game losing streak.
Sheets left after two innings because of tightness in his right forearm. The severity of the All-Star's injury was not immediately known.
The Brewers gave interim manager Dale Sveum his first victory and stayed a half-game behind New York in the NL wild-card race.
The Cubs had won five in a row. Their magic number for clinching the NL Central remained at four.
Sheets was replaced by Mark DiFelice (1-0), who pitched two innings for his first major league win.
Fielder lined a bases-loaded double into the right-field corner in the first off Jason Marquis (10-9). Mike Cameron's leadoff single and walks to Ray Durham and Ryan Braun had filled the bases for the Brewers.

Mets 9, Nationals 7: WASHINGTON -- Carlos Beltran homered from both sides of the plate, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado also went deep, and New York built a big lead then barely held on to beat Washington.
Brandon Knight (1-0), a 32-year-old journeyman back from the Olympics, earned his first major league victory with five solid innings.
The Mets had lost four of their previous five games to fall out of first place in the NL East. They remained a half-game behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies, who beat Atlanta.
New York began the day with a half-game lead over Milwaukee for the wild card.
Reyes led off the game by homering off Shairon Martis (0-3), and Delgado also hit a solo shot in the first. Beltran hit a two-run drive in the third, and a solo homer in the eighth.

Phillies 6, Braves 1: ATLANTA -- Ryan Howard drove in the first run in Philadelphia's four-run first inning, and rookie J.A. Happ pitched six scoreless innings to help the Phillies earn their season-high sixth straight win.
Howard, bidding to win his second NL MVP award in three years, has 29 RBIs in his last 21 games and 137 this season to lead the majors.
Happ (1-0) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two in his fourth career start and first since getting no decision July 9 in Philadelphia's 4-2 win over St. Louis.
Jair Jurrjens (13-10) gave up four runs, five hits and five walks in five innings.

Pirates 15, Dodgers 8: PITTSBURGH -- Adam LaRoche hit a grand slam among his two homers and Pittsburgh stalled Los Angeles' late-season surge with an eight-run seventh inning rally.
Ryan Doumit, who drove in four runs, hit a go-ahead, two-run homer as nine consecutive batters reached base in the seventh after reliever Scott Proctor retired the first two batters, only to be lifted. Los Angeles had bounced back to tie it in the top of the inning after trailing 7-4.
Doumit's 14th homer came off rookie left-hander Scott Elbert (0-1), who didn't retire any of the four batters he faced
The Dodgers came into the game with a 4 1/2-game lead over Arizona. The Diamondbacks played the Giants later Wednesday.
John Grabow (6-3) got the win despite giving up Angel Berroa's RBI double in the top of the seventh.

Reds 3, Cardinals 0: CINCINNATI -- Aaron Harang pitched a six-hitter and Cincinnati hit back-to-back homers to send the Cardinals to their seventh straight loss Wednesday night.
Andy Phillips and Jay Bruce opened the fourth inning with consecutive home runs and Paul Janish added the first of his career later in the inning to help Harang (5-16) to his first win since Aug. 22.
The Reds have won four straight and seven of their last nine games.
St. Louis starter Todd Wellemeyer (12-8) didn't allow a hit until Phillips led off the fourth inning with a home run to center, his second homer of the season. Bruce followed with another homer to center, his 19th this year. Janish connected two outs later.

Rockies 1, Padres 0: DENVER -- Joe Koshansky homered and five Colorado pitchers combined for a five-hitter in the Rockies' win over San Diego.
Starter Livan Hernandez (2-3) and relievers Glendon Rusch, Ryan Speier, Manny Corpas and Brian Fuentes shut down the Padres' offense.
Koshansky, Chris Iannetta and Ian Stewart had two hits each for the Rockies, who won the last two games of the three-game series.
Koshansky accounted for the only run with a two-out drive over the center-field wall off of San Diego starter Josh Greer (2-1) in the fourth inning.

Yankees 5, White Sox 1: NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez became the first player with 35 homers and 100 RBIs in 12 different seasons -- one more than Babe Ruth -- and the New York Yankees slowed the Chicago White Sox's pursuit of the AL Central crown with a 5-1 victory Wednesday night.
Johnny Damon hit a two-run homer, Robinson Cano had three hits and Xavier Nady had a tying RBI single in the seventh inning.
Jermaine Dye had an RBI groundout off Phil Hughes, who was making his first start since April 29. That was all the White Sox could muster against Hughes and four relievers, who threw five shutout innings. The White Sox entered the night with a 2 1/2 game lead over Minnesota.
Hughes' return to the mound was cut short after just four innings. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up a run and four hits. Brian Bruney (3-0) came on with a runner on second in the seventh and got three straight outs. Joba Chamberlain worked the eighth before Edwar Ramirez got the final three outs.
Clayton Richard (2-5) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings for Chicago.

Rays 10, Red Sox 3: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Willy Aybar, Gabe Gross and Fernando Perez homered off Tim Wakefield and AL East-leading Tampa Bay beat Boston to move closer to its first playoff berth.
Matt Garza gave up two long home runs to David Ortiz, but the Rays otherwise held the Red Sox in check to extend their division lead over them to two games.
Tampa Bay can clinch at least a wild-card playoff berth by beating Minnesota twice during a four-game series that begins Thursday at Tropicana Field.
Aybar, who was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, hit a two-run homer off Wakefield (9-11) in the first inning. Aybar drove in the last of the six runs charged to the knuckleballer with a third-inning single off Devern Hansack.
Grant Balfour (5-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Indians 6, Twins 4: CLEVELAND -- Cliff Lee was denied his 23rd win and finished with a no-decision against Minnesota -- the only AL team to beat him -- and the Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Twins, another gnawing loss for the Central's second-place team.
Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez hit RBI doubles in the seventh inning off Matt Guerrier as the Indians prevented the Twins from gaining ground on Chicago.
Lee took a 4-2 lead into the seventh and was poised to improve his record to 23-2 -- only the second pitcher to own that record in 108 years -- when the Twins tied it.
Alexi Casilla reached on third baseman Jamey Carroll's error and Joe Mauer doubled. Casilla scored on Justin Morneau's groundout, and Lee got two strikes on Delmon Young before the outfielder grounded an outside pitch to right to even it at 4-all. Edward Mujica (2-2) finished the seventh for the Indians..
Jose Mijares (0-1) took the loss for the Twins.

Blue Jays 8, Orioles 7: TORONTO -- Travis Snider drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Blue Jays rallied to beat Baltimore.
Scott Rolen led off the eighth with a double against Kam Mickolio (0-1) and advanced on Curtis Thigpen's sacrifice. Snider followed with a flyball to left to give Toronto an 8-7 lead.
Alex Rios hit his 15th homer and had three RBIs for the Blue Jays, who finished with 14 hits. Rolen went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, scored twice and drove in a run.
Jesse Carlson (7-1) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win, and B.J. Ryan got three outs for his 30th save in 34 opportunities.

Royals 5, Mariners 2: KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jose Guillen hit a key two-run single after being sick the night before, helping the Royals to their sixth straight win.
Kansas City struggled against Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith, staying close in a tight game on Ryan Shealy's fourth homer in five games. Guillen, a late scratch the night before, came up with the big hit in the seventh, lining a two-run single off Roy Corcoran (5-2).
Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was 3-for-3 to reach 200 hits for the eighth consecutive season, matching Willie Keeler's major league record.
The Mariners (57-94) lost their seventh straight, moving a step closer to their first 100-loss season since 1983.
Gil Meche (12-11) pitches seven effective innings. He allowed six hits and two runs, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Tigers 17, Rangers 4: ARLINGTON -- Freddy Garcia pitched five innings to win in his first game since June 2007 and Detroit scored nine runs in the fifth inning to beat Texas and snap a six-game losing streak.
Garcia (1-0) allowed an unearned run and two hits. He signed a minor league contract last month, more than a year after his season ended for Philadelphia because of an injured shoulder.
The 33-year-old righty struck out three, walked one and threw only 59 pitches. The two-time All-Star went 17-9 for the Chicago White Sox in 2006, but was 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 11 starts year for the Phillies.
Miguel Cabrera was 4-for-5 and hit a three-run homer -- his 34th -- and Dusty Ryan also had four hits as the Tigers avoided tying their longest losing streak of the season.
Dustin Nippert (3-5) allowed five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
