COLLEGE BASKETBALL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The father of highly sought Kansas basketball recruits C.J. and Xavier Henry said Tuesday his sons may not play at Kansas, after all.

Xavier Henry, a 6-6 guard, is considered one of the most talented players Kansas coach Bill Self has ever recruited.

Xavier and his older brother, C.J., were headed to Memphis before switching to Kansas in the wake of John Calipari's decision to coach at Kentucky.

But their father, Carl Henry, told Kansas City sportstalk station WHB Tuesday that the family was upset with a story in The Kansas City Star on Sunday. The story, the father said, portrayed his sons as being disinterested in attending classes at college.

Henry said he planned to meet Tuesday night with his sons at the family home in Oklahoma City to see if the boys want to go to Kentucky or keep their commitment to Kansas.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA is finished with the latest Kelvin Sampson saga.

The NCAA on Tuesday rejected an appeal from the former Indiana basketball coach, who was slapped with five years of potential penalties for taking part in more than 100 impermissible calls to recruits while coaching the Hoosiers.

The NCAA said its infractions committee upheld the violations found in the case, which prompted an overhaul at the storied program and led to Sampson's departure after just 1 1/2 years. An NCAA spokeswoman said Sampson has used his only appeal, and the case is closed.

Sampson, now an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, is essentially barred from coaching in college until 2013.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Mike Krzyzewski made it clear: He's not ever going to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.

During his annual summer meeting with reporters Tuesday, one of the first topics covered by the Duke coach was the simmering buzz that had him leaving the Blue Devils for the Lakers if Phil Jackson retires.

"I'm not going to the Lakers. They have one of the great coaches in the game," Krzyzewski said. "I don't know where that rumor started, but there has been nothing done like that, and I'm not leaving Duke. Whatever you hear about anything like that, I will never leave Duke until I leave coaching."

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska will wear uniforms matching those worn by the 1962 Cornhuskers to help celebrate Memorial Stadium's 300th consecutive sellout Sept. 26 against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Nebraska's ongoing NCAA-record sellout streak started Nov. 3, 1962, against Missouri, the seventh game coached by Bob Devaney. The sellout streak now stands at 297 games, and every game in 2009 is expected to sell out.

The throwback uniforms, numbered 1 through 99, will be auctioned to the public as full sets on the athletic department Web site (www.huskers.com). Bidding, which opens in August, starts at $500.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The NCAA reduced the probation period for Alabama State University's football program on Tuesday from five to three years, citing efforts by the school to fix problems while the investigation was ongoing.

In December the NCAA placed the Hornets football program on probation for 17 rules violations that allegedly occurred from 1999-2003. Violations included changing grades, allowing ineligible players to play and practice and conducting offseason workouts not allowed by NCAA rules.

Alabama State officials had appealed the sanctions and the NCAA said in a release Tuesday that it determined ASU officials took actions to fix problems, contrary to what the NCAA initially thought.

The NCAA said that the five-year penalty was based partly on the length of time it took to complete the investigation and the belief that there appeared to be little activity by the university over the probe's two and a-half years. But the NCAA release said a committee considering Alabama State's appeal found that "substantial activity by the university occurred during this time."

The NCAA did not lift a penalty that prevents the Hornets from competing in postseason play in 2009, including the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

NHL

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars have re-signed right wing Jere Lehtinen to a one-year deal.

The Stars gave the 36-year-old Lehtinen, who has spent his entire career with Dallas, a contract with a base salary of $1.5 million and the possibility of as much as $1 million in incentives.

Lehtinen had eight goals and 16 assists in 48 games last season. He missed 34 games because of injury. For his career, Lehtinen has played in 817 games and has 497 points off 239 goals and 258 assists, and three times he's won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward.

*

NEW YORK -- Scott Gomez's brief New York tenure ended Tuesday when the star center was traded by the Rangers to the Montreal Canadiens as part of a six-player deal.

The key player coming back to New York is forward Chris Higgins, a Long Island native who is set to become a restricted free agent. The deal was announced one day before the NHL's free-agent shopping season opens Wednesday.

Gomez was sent to Montreal with minor leaguers Tom Pyatt, a forward, and defenseman Mike Busto. Along with Higgins, the Rangers received defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko from the Canadiens.

NFL

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded receiver Dennis Northcutt to the Detroit Lions for safety Gerald Alexander.

The deal was finalized Tuesday after both players passed physicals.

Northcutt gives the Lions a veteran receiver opposite rising star Calvin Johnson.

Alexander, a second-round pick in 2007, gives Jacksonville depth in the secondary. He started 16 games as a rookie, but missed most of last year following a neck injury.

Northcutt, who has 364 receptions for 4,584 yards and 17 touchdowns, has been projected to start this season. But Jacksonville's three rookie receivers were impressive enough during offseason drills that Northcutt became expendable.

*

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have signed their fifth-round draft pick, offensive tackle Colin Brown.

Terms were not disclosed Tuesday.

Brown earned Big 12 honors as a junior and senior at Missouri, which finished both of those seasons ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense.

The 6-foot-7-inch, 335-pound lineman played in 43 games for the Tigers, starting 28. He played in three bowl wins and two Big 12 championship games.

*

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants have signed running back Andre Brown, their fourth-round selection from North Carolina State.

He is the sixth 2009 draft choice to sign with the Giants. Terms of the deal were not released.

The only unsigned draft picks are wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, the first-round selection from North Carolina, and second-round picks Clint Sintim and William Beatty.

Brown played in 44 games with 30 starts at N.C. State. He gained more than 2,500 yards and scored 22 touchdowns. He also caught 70 passes and had 341 yards on 17 kickoff returns.

To clear space on the roster for Brown, the Giants waived rookie Alex Derenthal, a free agent from Temple.

*

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have waived undrafted rookie linebackers Mike Juergens and Brit Miller.

The moves on Tuesday create half the roster space needed for Carolina's four remaining unsigned draft picks.

Juergens played at Wyoming and Miller at Illinois. They were signed days after the draft and participated in the offseason minicamp and optional workouts.

The Panthers must still sign second-round picks Everette Brown and Sherrod Martin, third-round choice Corvey Irvin and fifth-rounder Duke Robinson. Training camp begins Aug. 2.

OLYMPICS

NORTHBROOK, Ill. -- The Dream Team has earned a spot in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

The star-studded team that featured Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley and won the gold medal in Barcelona headlines this year's class of 10 inductees. The class, which will be formally announced Wednesday morning, will be inducted Aug. 12 in Chicago.

Joining the Dream Team are Michael Johnson, the only man to win gold in the 200 and 400 meters at the same Olympics; Picabo Street (skiing); Teresa Edwards (basketball); Mary T. Meagher (swimming); and Willye White (athletics). Skiier Sarah Will is the Paralympic inductee.

Former USOC chairman Peter Ueberroth, gymnastics coach Abie Grossfeld and skier Andrea Mead-Lawrence also are being inducted.

The hall is presented by Allstate.
