NFL

NEW YORK -- The NFL suspended Jets linebacker Calvin Pace for four games without pay Thursday for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Pace will miss New York's first four games of the season and be eligible to return for the Monday night game at Miami on Oct. 12.

In a statement issued by the Jets, Pace said the ban is a result of him taking an over-the-counter dietary supplement that he was unaware violated the NFL's policy.

Pace, in his second season with the Jets, is eligible to participate in preseason practices and games. The suspension begins Sept. 5 and he can return to practice on Oct. 5, a day after New York's game at New Orleans.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney is making his first official trip as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, one day after being sworn in by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The State Department says Rooney is traveling to Dublin on Thursday and is to meet with Ireland President Mary McAleese on Friday.

By presenting his credentials to the Irish president, Rooney is officially recognized as the Irish ambassador. His first duty as ambassador will be to attend a Friday luncheon at the American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland.

Rooney was a lifelong Republican who backed President Barack Obama during Pennsylvania's presidential primary last year. He campaigned for Obama in the western part of the state and helped him win Pennsylvania in November.

RICHMOND, Va. -- Suspended NFL star Michael Vick has submitted a revised bankruptcy plan that funnels more of his future earnings to creditors, though a judge did not immediately rule on the proposal.

Vick filed the new Chapter 11 plan Thursday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News.

A judge rejected Vick's original plan in April. The revised plan also ensures creditors will get some money even if Vick can't resume his NFL career.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he will review Vick's status after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback completes his 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring. Vick is serving the last two months of the sentence on home confinement in Hampton and is scheduled to be released July 20.

Vick's next bankruptcy hearing is set for July 31.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers are taking another chance with a former minor league baseball player.

The franchise that once drafted and started quarterback Chris Weinke claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie off waivers from the New York Jets on Thursday. The 26-year-old spent four seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system before switching to football.

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Davie caught 24 passes for 199 yards and six touchdowns in three season at Arkansas. He went undrafted in April and signed with the Jets.

Davie will provide depth in training camp behind starting tight end Jeff King and backups Dante Rosario and Gary Barnidge.

NHL

BOSTON -- Mark Recchi joined the Boston Bruins hoping to win his fourth Stanley Cup ring. He decided to stay to take another shot at it.

The NHL's sixth-leading active goal scorer signed a one-year deal Thursday to return to the Bruins.

The 41-year-old Recchi originally was obtained in a March 4 trade from Tampa Bay.

Recchi has been part of three Stanley Cup-winning teams -- Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992 and Carolina in 2006. He has 545 goals and 897 assists for 1,442 points in 1,490 regular-season games for seven clubs. He had six goals and 10 assists in 18 regular-season games with Boston.

The signing followed three others announced by the Bruins on Wednesday with forwards Steve Begin and Byron Bitz and defenseman Johnny Boychuck.

WNBA

Fever 67, Sun 53: INDIANAPOLIS -- Tammy Sutton-Brown had 14 points and 14 rebounds to help the Indiana Fever beat the Connecticut Sun 67-53 Thursday night and stretch their winning streak to a franchise-record seven games.

Katie Douglas scored 14 points and Tamika Catchings and Ebony Hoffman each scored 10 for Indiana (7-2), which has the WNBA's best record.

Lindsay Whalen scored 11 points and Asjha Jones added 10 for the Sun (4-4), whose three-game winning streak ended.

Loree Moore had 15 points, Cathrine Kraayeveld added 13, and Essence Carson 12 to help the Liberty (3-6) snap a three-game losing streak.

Cheryl Ford scored 13 points and Deanna Nolan and Kara Braxton had 12 each for the defending champion Shock (2-6), who fell to last in the Eastern Conference.

The Liberty made a season-high 12 3-pointers to win the teams' first meeting since the Shock beat New York in three games in the Eastern Conference finals last year en route to their second title in three years.

Monarchs 74, Lynx 68: MINNEAPOLIS -- Rebekkah Brunson scored the go-ahead basket with 34 seconds left and blocked a key shot moments later, helping Sacramento snap a six-game losing streak.

The Monarchs (2-8) made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory, their first since June 12 against Phoenix. Nicole Powell led all scorers with 21 points, Kara Lawson scored 14, and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba chipped in 11.

Western Conference-leading Minnesota (7-4) took a 64-59 advantage with 5 minutes to play, but the Monarchs finished the game on a 10-2 run. Roneeka Hodges led five Lynx players in double figures with 15 points, as Minnesota's three-game winning streak ended.
