NBA

LOS ANGELES -- Phil Jackson will return to coach the Los Angeles Lakers next season, getting a clean bill of health following a record championship season.

The Hall of Fame coach turns 64 in September and said on the team's Web site Friday he got the go-ahead for another season after consulting the team doctor.

Jackson led the Lakers to their 15th NBA championship and his 10th title in June, breaking the mark he shared with the late Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach.

He signed a two-year contract extension last season and holds the option on a second year.

Last season, Jackson missed two West Coast road games because of pain and swelling in his lower legs caused by plantar fasciitis, a problem he had checked out. He blamed late-night flights that aggravated the condition.

WNBA

Silver Stars 85, Sky 72: SAN ANTONIO -- Sophia Young had 19 points and eight rebounds in leading the San Antonio Silver Stars to an 85-72 win over the Chicago Sky on Friday night.

Becky Hammon added 14 points with 10 assists as San Antonio (4-4) moved back to .500 after losing its first home game on Tuesday to Washington on a last-second bucket.

Vickie Johnson had 15, Ruth Riley 14, and Edwidge Lawson-Wade 12 as the five double-digit scorers combined for 74 of the Silver Stars' points.

Armintie Price led the Sky with 17 points. The Sky (6-4), who snapped a three-game winning streak, remained winless on the road.

Dream 72, Mystics 65: ATLANTA -- Chamique Holdsclaw scored 18 points, and Sancho Lyttle added 16, helping the Dream snap a two-game losing streak.

Alana Beard had 16 points for Washington, which has dropped three of four and missed its first nine 3-point attempts before Matee Ajavon hit two straight in the final 2 minutes. The Mystics began the game with the WNBA's third-best percentage beyond the arc at 39.4.

The Dream, who had lost four of five, forced Washington into 28 turnovers, a season high for the Mystics that resulted in 23 points. After winning just four games as an expansion team last year, Atlanta improved to 5-6 this season.

PHOENIX -- Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi said Friday that she's embarrassed after being cited for drunken driving a few hours after she helped lead her team to victory over the Seattle Storm.

An officer stopped Taurasi early Thursday for speeding, police spokesman Luis Samudio said. The officer smelled alcohol and gave the player several field sobriety tests, according to a police statement.

Taurasi, the WNBA's leading fan vote-getter for the July 25 All-Star game, was then driven to a mobile DUI van, where she gave a blood sample, then was cited and released. Authorities did not know her blood alcohol content.

The team said Friday that Taurasi notified the club immediately but would not comment further until it knows more of what happened.

But after Friday's practice, Taurasi told reporters that her DUI citation was "just something that's embarrassing and unfortunate for my family and the organization."

NASCAR

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Clint Bowyer's first victory of the season gave Richard Childress Racing a much-needed boost.

Bowyer won the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Friday night, holding off Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards in a green-white-checkered finish.

"These guys never give up, the guys at RCR and the ladies," Childress said. "They just dig and dig. We've been a little bit off, and when you get a little bit off, everybody wants to kind of kick you. We just take that lick and come on back."

Bowyer, the defending series champion, was the leader when a multicar accident brought out the caution with six laps to go in the Subway Jalapeno 250. That set up a final two-lap overtime sprint, and Bowyer lined up inside of Edwards for the double-file restart.

With Busch pushing him from behind, Bowyer raced to the front. He didn't have to deal with a challenge from Busch because an accident in the fourth turn brought out a race-ending caution, giving RCR its first win of the year.

Busch finished second, followed by Edwards, Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tony Stewart will start from a familiar spot Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway.

The Sprint Cup points leader was awarded the pole for the Coke Zero 400 when rain washed out qualifying Friday.

It was Stewart's third pole -- all in rainouts -- in the last five races. He also started up front at Pocono last month and New Hampshire last week.

Starting from the front has proven beneficial for Stewart. His first points-race win as a driver/car owner came at Pocono, and he finished fifth at New Hampshire. His only Daytona pole came in July 2005, when he won his first race at NASCAR's most famous track.

Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin rounded out the first three rows.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

HONOLULU -- Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation.

The 27-year-old Chang was arrested at his Mililani home Thursday after a woman alleged her camera was taken away from her while she was filming a brawl last month in the Pearlridge area.

A man, whom Honolulu police say was Chang, told the woman to stop filming the fight. A struggle ensued and the suspect allegedly took the camera and threw it on the roof of a nearby building.

Chang could not be reached for comment. He holds the NCAA's career leader in passing yards. He last played in the Canadian Football League and was released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in February.
