LOCAL BRIEFS

Desern, Wood take fourth at bowling tournament: Emily Desern and Brandon Wood bowled a 652 series to take fourth in the Doubles Division II at the Second Annual Brazos Valley USBC Youth Tournament held recently at Grand Station Bowling.

BASEBALL

BCS Baseball is hosting a USSSA baseball tournament in the Bryan-College Station area on Saturday and Sunday. Tournaments also will be held April 26-27, May 10-11, May 31-June 1 and June 21-22.

College Station Little League is looking for umpires for the Spring 2008 season.

FISHING

The 25th Annual KCKL 95.9 FM Big Bass Tournament is March 29-30 at Cedar Creek Lake.

Entry fee is $65 per day. Youth entry fees (under 16 years old) are $10 per day.

GOLF

The Texas A&M men's senior golf league will resume play Monday. The league is open to any golfer over the age of 55. Tee times are from 7 to 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Don Bork at 846-6400.

RUNNING

A Jeff Galloway marathon training program is starting in the Bryan-College Station area with the kick-off event set for 7 p.m. on April 3 at the Wings-n-More party room on Deacon in College Station. Galloway, a former Olympian, will be at the kick-off.

Interested runners will begin training for the San Antonio Marathon/Half-Marathon in November. Runners will train on Saturday mornings in pace groups. Participants will train on their own during the week with a provided schedule.

Cost for the full-marathon program (29 weeks) is $159 while the half-marathon program (16 weeks) is $99.

SOFTBALL

The 2008 Bryan-Rudder softball camp is set for June 30-July 3 at the Bryan High Softball Complex.

The camp, which runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day, costs $60. Discounts are given for two or more siblings ($50 each). Child care is also available from 7:45-8:30 a.m. for an additional $10.

The camp is open to girls in second through eighth grades (2007-2008 school year). For more information, contact camp director Enrique Luna at 209-7970 or 571-5273.

Registration is now open for the 2008 Texas A&M softball camp.

A&M head coach Jo Evans, in her 12th season at the helm of Aggie softball, and associate head coaches Joy Jackson and Mary Jo Firnbach will be joined by current and former players as well as various high school and collegiate coaches to offer individual and group instruction with an emphasis on fundamentals.

The varsity camp for ages 13-18 is June 15-18 while a camp for 9- to 12-year-olds is June 19-22.

RESULTS

Aggie Swim Club competes at championship: HOUSTON -- The Aggie Swim Club competed at the 14-and-under Spring Championship meet hosted by Cy-Fair/FLEET on Feb. 22-24.

Matthew Bitara won five individual events and won the high point award for the 11- to 12-year old boys division. Jack Rogers, Fernando Zambrano and Harrison Jones each won individual races, while Rogers, Hunter Scott, Josh Duewall and Shankar won the 200-yard medley relay.

Rogers and Sujay Shankar took second and third, respectively, in the 8-and-under boys division high point standings. Jones took fourth and Zambrano was fifth in the 11-12 boys high point. Hayden Duplechain placed fifth in the 13-14 boys high point placing.

Team members also set eight new individual and three relay records at the meet. Shankar set records in the 7-8 boys 50 and 100 freestyles. In the 11-12 boys, Bitara set records in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 50 butterfly while David Deng set records in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events. The 8 & under relay team of Shankar, Rogers, Scott and Duewall set a 200 freestyle record. The 11-12 boys relay team of Zambrano, Jones, Bitara and Laine Johansen set a 400 freestyle relay record and the team of John Nalley, Deng, Bitara and Jones set a 400 medley relay record.

Four TAGS times were also reached. Zambrano qualified in the 12-year old boys 50 and 200 backstroke. Johansen qualified in the 11-year old boys 100 breaststroke and Brittany Thurstin qualified in the 12-year old girls 100 freestyle.

The College Station Twelve 12U AAA team won the Shiner Starplex February Classic on Feb. 23-24. The team went 5-0 and outscored its opponents 49-17, including a 10-2 victory over the Brenham Cubs in the championship. Chris Polak (left) and Nicholas Vance bowled a 1,299 to win the Doubles Division II Championship at the Second Annual Brazos Valley USBC Youth Tournament at Grand Station Bowling Center. Vance also placed sixth in the Singles Division I with a 663 series and was third in the All Events Division I with a 2,024 series.
