Third & Short for October 26

NHL

Capitals 6, Stars 5, OT: DALLAS -- Alexander Semin scored at 2:17 of overtime and the Washington Capitals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Mike Modano's 532nd career goal off a setup by Brenden Morrow pulled Dallas into a 5-5 tie with 56.4 seconds left in regulation.

Midway through overtime, Semin collected a loose puck in the right circle and beat goaltender Marty Turco in the upper left corner. Semin was mobbed by teammates after his seventh goal of the season.

Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Fleischmann scored two goals apiece and Tyler Sloan added his first career goal for the Capitals.

Dallas rallied from a 4-2 deficit on B.J. Crombeen's redirect with 4:05 left in the second period -- his first career goal -- and Loui Eriksson's rebound at :56 of the third period.

The Caps went back in front 5-4 when Sloan, playing in his third NHL game, scored on a rebound at 2:22 of the final period.

Sean Avery scored his first goal for the Stars and added an assist. Dallas signed Avery to a four-year, $14 million free-agent contract in the offseason, and he was off to a slow start with two assists in his first eight games.

NEW YORK -- A suburban police chief likened the conflicting accounts of an accidental overdose at Isiah Thomas' home to a "cover-up" and rebuked the former New York Knicks coach Saturday for saying it was his teenage daughter who required treatment.

"It wasn't his daughter," Harrison Police Chief David Hall told The Associated Press. "And why they're throwing her under the bus is beyond my ability to understand."

Authorities were called early Friday to Thomas' Westchester County home, where police said a 47-year-old man was taken to the hospital and treated for an overdose of sleeping pills. Several media outlets reported that police confirmed it was Thomas who went to the hospital.

But reached on his cell phone Friday, the 47-year-old NBA great told the New York Post he had not been treated for a sleeping pill overdose, and that it was 17-year-old daughter Lauren who had a medical issue.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers exercised fourth-year options Saturday on the contracts of forward LaMarcus Aldridge and guards Sergio Rodriguez and Brandon Roy.

The Blazers also said exercised their third-year option on center Greg Oden, who missed last season following microfracture surgery on his right knee after being selected No. 1 overall in the NBA draft.

The moves, announced by general manager Kevin Pritchard, keep all four players under contract through the 2009-10 season.

The Trail Blazers acquired Aldridge, Rodriguez and Roy in 2006 draft-day trades.
