TOP 25 ROUNDUP: Penn St. gets big win at Ohio St.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Pat Devlin came off the bench for injured starting quarterback Daryll Clark in the fourth quarter, leading two scoring drives and sneaking in for the go-ahead touchdown to give No. 3 Penn State a 13-6 victory over No. 10 Ohio State on Saturday night.

The win put the Nittany Lions (9-0, 5-0) in command in the Big Ten and severely crimped the chances of the Buckeyes (7-2, 4-1) grabbing an unprecedented third consecutive outright league title and a piece of their fourth conference championship in a row.

Ohio State had the ball and a three-point lead when Terrelle Pryor fumbled on a third-and-1 early in the fourth quarter. Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman fell on the loose ball at the Buckeyes 38 after players scrambled to recover.

In stepped Devlin, who had seen action in seven games but had only been on the field for 45 plays.

He promptly led the way on a seven-play, 38-yard drive that took 4:13 and ended with his touchdown giving Penn State a 10-6 lead.

*

No. 2 Alabama 29, Tennessee 9: KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- John Parker Wilson passed for 188 yards and ran for a touchdown.

The win gives the Crimson Tide (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) its first back-to-back wins over the Volunteers (3-5, 1-4) in a usually streaky "Third Saturday in October" series since the 1991-92 seasons.

*

No. 5 Florida 63, Kentucky 5: GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Tim Tebow threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores to help the Gators extend their winning streak in the series to 22 games.

Now, the Gators can focus on the game they've been looking forward to for a year: Georgia, a hated rival that stomped its way to a victory last season that essentially knocked Florida out of the Southeastern Conference race.

*

No. 9 Georgia 52, No. 11 LSU 38: BATON ROUGE, La. -- Knowshon Moreno quieted one of the loudest crowds in college football, running for a 68-yard score and finishing with 163 yards rushing.

Georgia linebacker Darryl Gamble returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns of 37 and 53 yards.

*

Louisville 24, No. 14 South Florida 20: LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hunter Cantwell threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Scott Long with 7:07 left to play to help Louisville upset penalty-plagued South Florida.

The 14th-ranked Bulls committed 14 penalties for 109 yards, including a defensive holding on a missed field goal by Louisville that would have given USF (6-2, 1-2 Big East) the ball back late in the fourth quarter.

South Florida's Matt Grothe threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns, but he also was picked off twice.

*

Rutgers 54, No. 17 Pittsburgh 34: PITTSBURGH -- Mike Teel, booed at times by his own fans this season, threw five of his school-record six touchdown passes in the first half and Rutgers came out throwing to confound No. 17 Pittsburgh's previously reliable defense.

Teel, a senior who had only three touchdown passes in seven games, found Kenny Britt on scoring plays of 79, 7 and 26 yards and Tim Brown for 60 and 36 yards -- all against what was the Big East's top-ranked and nation's 10th-rated pass defense..

*

No. 18 BYU 42, UNLV 35: PROVO, Utah -- Max Hall threw for four touchdowns and the Cougars avoided a second straight loss.

BYU's Andrew Rich intercepted Omar Clayton's pass in the end zone on the final play to seal BYU's 17th straight win at home.

The Cougars had the nation's longest winning streak until last week's visit to TCU and were in danger Saturday of falling into a losing streak when UNLV (3-5, 0-4) went up 35-34 with 6:49 left to play.

But Hall led BYU 74 yards and threw a 6-yard touchdown to Dennis Pitta with 1:46 remaining.

*

No. 20 Ball St. 38, E. Michigan 16: MUNCIE, Ind. -- With Ball State's most inspiring player, Dante Love, on hand, the Cardinals had no real problem getting to 8-0.

Love, who was leading the nation in receiving before a career-ending spinal injury at Indiana last month, returned to Scheumann Stadium for the first time Saturday and watched from the coaches box.

Nate Davis caught the first touchdown pass of his career and threw two more as the Cardinals (8-0, 4-0 Mid-American) continued their best start in 43 years.

*

Virginia 24, No. 21 Georgia Tech: ATLANTA -- Cedric Peerman rushed for 118 bruising yards, including the winning touchdown with 31/2 minutes left, and Virginia won its fourth straight.

The Cavaliers rallied from an early 14-3 deficit in their comeback of a season, improbably taking over first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division after losing three of their first four games -- by an average of 36 points.

Georgia Tech (6-2, 3-2 ACC) scored a pair of touchdowns on its first two possessions, but the Cavaliers (5-3, 3-1) figured out the spread option offense, keeping the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone the rest of the way.

*

North Carolina 45, No. 23 Boston College 24: CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Hakeem Nicks had three second-quarter touchdown catches and ran for a score in the fourth quarter.

Trimane Goddard added an interception return for a touchdown for the Tar Heels (6-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter before roaring back with a dominating performance that made them bowl-eligible for the first time in four years. The Tar Heels also got a short touchdown run from Ryan Houston after a long interception return by Kendric Burney, who had two of the team's three picks of BC quarterback Chris Crane.

Nicks finished with eight catches for 139 yards -- with 127 yards coming in a 24-point second quarter -- and three rushes for 31 yards.

*

No. 24 Florida St 30, Virginia Tech 20: TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Greg Carr made two fingertip catches on long pass plays to set up touchdowns in the third quarter and 24th-ranked Florida State rallied from an early 10-point deficit.

The win leaves Florida State (6-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) tied with Maryland for first place in the ACC's Atlantic Division and in control of its own destiny for a shot at the league's Dec. 6 championship game.

Carr, who had three catches for 100 yards, beat Hokies star cornerback Victor Harris for a 48-yard pass from Christian Ponder to set up the go-ahead score. Moments later, his 39-yard catch along the sideline set up another touchdown that gave Florida State a 24-13 lead.

*

No. 25 Minnesota 17, Purdue 6: WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Adam Weber passed for a touchdown and ran for another against Purdue, which lost star quarterback Curtis Painter to injury in the first half.

Weber passed for 212 yards and ran for 60, and Brandon Green caught five passes for 100 yards for the Golden Gophers (7-1, 3-1 Big Ten).

It was Purdue's 18th straight loss to a ranked opponent, including four this season. The Boilermakers (2-6, 0-4) have lost their last five games and are in danger of missing a bowl in coach Joe Tiller's final season.
