AUSTIN, Texas -- A phony telemarketing sweepstakes in Texas uses scam artists posing as Federal Trade Commission workers.
The Texas Attorney General's Office on Wednesday issued an advisory warning of the scheme.
The statement says callers tell recipients that they must pay several thousand dollars for insurance before they can receive a certified check for the prize.
The AG's office says an initial call, followed by a letter, falsely try to present the scam as being legitimate.
Texans who get a call from a bogus FTC representative should contact the Attorney General Greg Abbott's office or the Federal Trade Commission. ------
