AUSTIN -- A woman who pleaded guilty to stabbing her ex-husband's dog 27 times was sentenced to six months in jail with 10 years deferred adjudication.
Joanne Lee Hinojosa, 33, pleaded Tuesday in a plea deal over the 2006 stabbing of Marti, a 20-pound mixed breed, which was later euthanized because of her injuries.
According to a police affidavit, Hinojosa went to then-estranged husband Reyes Martinez's home and began to yell. When he ran down the street, she took Marti in the house, where the dog was later found with a knife sticking out of her side, police said.
Hinojosa's lawyer, Rip Collins, said that at the time of the stabbing his client was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from the dissolution of her marriage and from a bad childhood. Hinojosa, free on bail, declined to comment as she left court.
Hinojosa's plea agreement also calls for her to continue mental health counseling, take prescribed medication, undergo anger management treatment and perform 250 hours of community service. The community service may not be served at an animal facility, such as a shelter, and Hinojosa may not be the sole caretaker of any animals for 10 years, according to the deal.
Collins said Hinojosa is remarried and has several animals, including pet dogs, with her new husband.
Hinojosa also pleaded guilty to criminal mischief for hitting the vehicle of her ex-husband's friend with a shovel. She'll have to pay restitution and serve a concurrent sentence of three years deferred adjudication.
Prosecutors declined to comment because the case is still pending.
