Texas A&M was ranked 16th in the final Associated Press college football Top 25 poll, the program’s highest ranking since being fifth in 2012.

This is only the fifth time A&M has been in the final Top 25 since winning the Big 12 in 1998.

A&M, 9-4, climbed five spots after beating North Carolina State 52-13 in the Gator Bowl. The Aggies jumped West Virginia, Penn State, Fresno State, Mississippi State and Utah. All those teams lost bowl games except Fresno State (12-2) which beat Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl. Syracuse (10-3) was the lone team to pass the Aggies as the Orange climbed to 15th after being West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

A&M was among six Southeastern Conference teams in the final rankings with four in the Top 10. Alabama was second, LSU was sixth and Florida and Georgia tied for seventh. Kentucky was 12th.

A&M was 2-2 against teams in the final Top 25, losing to top-ranked Clemson and Alabama, but beating LSU and Kentucky.

A&M in 2019 will play the defending national champ on the road for the second straight season, traveling to Clemson on Sept. The Aggies also will be at Georgia on.
