Texas A&M sophomore pitcher Mason Cole was selected in the 27th round of the MLB draft by the Texas Rangers with the 805th overall pick Wednesday.

The right-hander from Round Rock saw action in 15 games in his two seasons in Aggieland, including six in 2019. He missed the majority of his freshman season due to injury. This season, he allowed 10 hits and five runs in 8 1/3 innings, while striking out nine and waking four.

Cole joined shortstop Braden Shewmake, starting pitcher John Doxakis and closer Kasey Kalich as A&M’s 2019 draft selections.

Two A&M signees were taken in the final day of the draft, including Colleyville Heritage outfielder Logan Britt (35th round, Chicago White Sox) and Frsico Heritage pitcher Evan Vanek (39th round, Arizona Diamondbacks).

Shewmake earned the team’s Marion Pugh MVP and Loraine B. & William B. “Breezy” Breazeale RBI awards Wednesday, while Doxakis earned the C.E. “Pat” Olsen Outstanding Pitcher Award, and Kalich earned the Wally Moon Award. Senior Jonathan Ducoff also earned the Marion Pugh Spirit Award.

The MLB Draft is done and only 4 of 12 eligible players were taken. Three pitchers and one position player. I predicted that Shewmake would be the only position player taken, as their offensive stats were the worst in the SEC. If that isn't enough proof that changes need to be made if the Aggies are going to compete in the post season, then I don't know what will. Even though the returning pitchers will still comprise one of the best staffs in the NCAA, without an offense, they will never get out of the Regionals and the CWS is a fantasy they will have to watch on TV. Not good enough. AD Bjork, are you listening?
