West businessman Van Taylor announced his candidacy for the 17th Congressional District on Tuesday afternoon at the Brazos County Republican Party headquarters in Bryan.

The Bryan stop is part of a four-city tour that also includes Waco, Granbury and Cleburne.

Taylor, 33, is a Harvard College graduate who served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps in the war in Iraq. While in Iraq, Taylor's platoon participated in the operation to rescue American prisoner of war Jessica Lynch, according to a press release distributed by Taylor's office.

Republican Tucker Anderson, a lawyer from Calvert, also recently announced his candidacy for the 17th District.

The GOP primary is scheduled for March 7. The winner will be the Republican nominee in the November general election.

The 17th District seat now is held by Democrat Chet Edwards, an eight-term incumbent from Waco.
