College Station woman released after theft charge

Eagle staff report

A College Station woman was released from the Brazos County Jail after she was charged with paying for her husband’s cosmetic eye surgery by writing a check on a closed account.

Tami Haggerton, 34, was arrested Monday and released the same day after posting a $15,000 bond.

According to documents filed by the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office, Haggerton wrote a $2,540 check to pay for the surgery, but when the doctor attempted to cash it, he found learned the account was no longer open.

A certified letter seeking compensation was sent to Haggerton, according to court records, but she did not respond.

Haggerton is charged with theft of between $1,500 and $20,000, a state jail felony punishable by 180 days to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000.
