Head-on collision kills couple

Eagle Staff Report

An elderly Somerville couple was killed near Cameron on Thursday when their car collided with an 18-wheeler.

Peggy and Bruce Wilkening died from injuries they sustained in the accident, which occurred around 8:45 a.m. It was unclear Thursday where they were heading.

The couple was traveling west on U.S. 190 when Peggy Wilkening failed to negotiate a curve in the road and their Buick LaSabre went into the oncoming lane, according to a Department of Public Safety accident report. The car ended up in the path of a tractor trailer that was heading east, and the vehicles crashed into each other.

Peggy Wilkening, 80, died at the scene. Bruce Wilkening, 78, was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where he died later in the day.

He was not wearing a seat belt but she was, the accident report states.

The driver of the truck, Juan Ogeda of O’Donnell, was not injured.

The Wilkenings’ daughter, Sherri Miller, said the two had grown up together in Somerville and were married for 57 years. They had two children.

Miller said her parents returned to the Burleson County town in 1982 when her father retired.

Funeral arrangements for the Wilkenings are pending with Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.
