Milano Lady Eagles

District: 26-A.

2005 record: 14-9, 6-2.

Coach: Greg Decker, second year (33-41 overall in five years).

Decker on the district race: "It should be between Burton and us. The two teams split last year and Burton took the district championship with a 7-1 record. Burton lost two or three key starters, compared to our one. It should turn out to be a close race and great games between Milano and Burton."

Decker's district prediction: 1. Milano, 2. Burton, 3. Bremond, 4. Snook, 5. Dime Box.

Team strengths: Defense, senior leadership.

Team weaknesses: Leaving runners on base.

Postseason history: Milano has made the playoffs for the past several seasons, but has not advanced beyond the first round.

St. Joseph Lady Eagles

District: TAPPS 4-2A.

2005 record: 13-3.

Coach: Crystal Simpson (third season, 21-11 record).

Returning starters: C Sara Roman, Jr., (.457, all-state); P-IF Jenny Scazzero, Jr., (.355, all-state); 3B Billie Francis, Jr., (.167, all-district); IF Kailey Veteto, So., (.250, all-district); SS Emma Quigley, So., (.150, all-district); CF Celeste Fontana, So.

Simpson on the district race: "I feel that it is going to be a close race between Waco Texas Christian and us. With most of my team coming back and strong leadership from the upperclassmen, we should make the playoffs. We've been there, and we know how much it takes to get to state."

Simpson's district prediction: 1. St. Joseph, 2. Waco Texas Christian, 3. Temple Holy Trinity, 4. Allen Academy.

Team strengths: Leadership, experience.

Team weaknesses: Mental mistakes.

Postseason history: Bi-district in 2004, State semifinals in 2005.

Brenham Cubettes

District: 18-4A.

2005 record: 38-5-1.

Mantooth on district race: "Anderson and North Zulch have their pitchers back and will be tough. Iola has an up-and-coming pitcher and should be much improved. It will probably be a three-team race, between Normangee, Anderson and North Zulch.

Mantooth's district prediction: 1. Anderson, 2. North Zulch, 3. Normangee, 4. Iola.

Team strengths: Pitching and catching.

Team weaknesses: Hitting, team speed.

Postseason history: Reached area round of playoffs last year, losing in three games to Big Sandy, the eventual state runnerup.

Hooten on her team's chances: "Very good. We are returning all but our second baseman from last year."

Team strengths: We only lost one player off of last years team and have no seniors this year.Ê I have 8 juniors and 3 sophomores that have been playing together for a long time.Ê We also have several freshmen that have stepped in and played a big role.

Team weaknesses: We have had some injuries early in the season.Ê We are hoping to have everyone healthy by district.

Postseason history: Madisonville made it to the area game last year for only the second time in school history.

Navasota Lady Rattlers

District: 20-3A

Coach: Lisa Smith (first year)

District: 19-3A.

2005 record: 15-9 (bi-district qualifiers).

Coach: Wendy Weiss (11th year, 121-95-1).

Returning starters: OF Kelsey Spittler, Jr. (district MVP, TGCA A-S, led team in BA, SBs and hits, 7 HRs); 1B/3B Christine Garbs, Jr.; C/P/3B Kea Rice, So.; 2B Kelsie Miller, So.

Weiss on the district race: "One of the toughest districts in the state in 3A. It will be a dogfight for first between Rockdale and defending state champion La Grange. Giddings, Cameron, Hutto and Caldwell will all fight for third."

Weiss' district prediction: 1. La Grange, 2. Rockdale.

Weiss on her team's chances: "We lost 10 seniors to graduation in the past two years and we have no seniors this year. We have a very competitive freshman class that has a chance to surprise some teams once we get a set lineup. I believe we have a fighting chance for third."

Team strengths: Willingness to learn, desire to win, two returning starters from 2004 state semifinalist team.

Team weaknesses: Experience.

Postseason history: 2005 bi-district qualifiers; 2004 state semifinalists; 2003 regional quarterfinalists; 2002 bi-district qualifiers.

Allen Academy Lady Rams

District: TAPPS 4-2A.

2005 record: Did not field a team.

Coach: Paul McMillan (first year).
