Motorcycle accident kills Hearne boy
Eagle Staff Report
Funeral services for a 12-year-old Hearne boy who died Saturday from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mumford student Christopher Juarez died at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. His uncle, Joe Sustaita, was treated and released from the hospital following the accident near Rockdale.
Sustaita, also a Hearne resident, was driving the motorcycle, and Juarez was a passenger. The two were headed east on U.S. 79 at about 6:20 p.m. when a car in front of them pulled onto an improved shoulder on the right side of the road and then signaled to make a left tun into a private drive, according to Department of Public Safety officials.
As the car began to turn, the motorcycle driver swerved in an attempt to avoid running into the back of the car and skidded onto its side, the accident report states. Both Juarez and Sustaita, 32, were thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle never did strike the car.
The accident remained under investigation late Sunday.
Juarez was wearing a helmet; Sustaita was not. Texas law requires any passenger on a motorcycle who is under 21 to wear a helmet.
A rosary is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.
