Two officers win at karate olympics

Two officers from the Brazos County Sheriff’s Department won medals at the 2003 Police Olympics Karate Competition last month in Midland.

Oscar Favila won a gold medal in Kata and a bronze medal in Kumite at the June 19 event. Rhonda Forsthoff earned a bronze medal in women’s Kata.

Favila is a former kickboxer who has been a black belt in Shotokan Karate since 1983. He has taught martial arts in Madisonville since 1989.

Forsthoff, one of Favila’s students, has been training for about two years and is a yellow belt.
