Woman killed in crash near Buckholts

Eagle Staff Report

A 22-year-old Temple woman was killed early Saturday when her car collided head on with an 18-wheeler in Milam County near Buckholts.

Barbara Conner Garcia was driving east on Texas 36 and U.S. 190 at about 6 a.m. when her Chevrolet Blazer crossed over the center stripe, according to a Department of Public Safety accident report.

A westbound truck driven by Pedro Roberto Flores, 28, of El Campo swerved left in an attempt to avoid the Blazer, investigators said, but the vehicles collided.

The wreck, which occurred less than a mile east of County Road 112, sent the 18-wheeler into a ditch, where it toppled on its side. Garcia’s vehicle also hit the ditch and ended up facing southeast.

Garcia and Flores were transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where Garcia later died. Flores was treated for minor injuries and released.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the DPS report, and alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the accident.
