Robert S. Cohen and Jane W. Cohen were honored with commissions as Admiral of the Texas Navy and Yellow Rose of Texas, respectively, by Gov. Greg Abbott at the Sons of the American Revolution state conference in Austin on April 6. Texas SAR President Tom Jackson introduced former Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who read the citations and presented the certificates. During the 1950s, Gov. Price Daniel popularized a tradition of Texas governors honoring citizens of Texas by proclaiming them “Admirals of the Texas Navy.” Citizens can receive the honorary title for a number of reasons, including special achievement in government service, community service or athletics. The criteria and the selection is approved by the board of directors chaired by the governor and at the discretion of the governor. The Yellow Rose of Texas is the highest award bestowed on women by the Texas governor in recognition of community service.
