Rudder boys basketball team loses to Manvel in regional semifinals

Rudder's Korbin Cunningham (left) drives around Manvel's Jalen Preston on Friday in the Class 5A Region III semifinals at Delmar Fieldhouse in Houston.

The College Station girls basketball team landed at No. 15 and the Rudder boys ended at No. 19 in the final Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 5A rankings for the 2016-17 season.

Both teams went on the longest playoff runs in their respective program histories. Rudder lost to Manvel in the 5A Region III semifinals and the Lady Cougars’ season came to an end in the regional quarterfinals.

The Rangers will return two of their top three scorers -- sophomore Korbin Cunningham (12.8) and junior Antoine Henderson (10.1).

The Lady Cougars will have to compensate for the loss of seniors Raenett Hughes, Keaton Sayers and Kaitlyn Francis, and hope to do so with the likes of freshman guard Mia Rivers and forwards Sydney Johnson and Kasey Jo Hinton.

Navasota’s girls team ended the year as the sixth-ranked 4A team. The Lady Rattlers lost to Liberty Hill in the regional quarterfinals.

Mumford finished the season as the third-ranked Class 2A boys team and the Dime Box boys finished at No. 9 in the Class 1A rankings. Mumford lost to Thorndale in its regional championship and Dime Box was defeated by Lipan in the 1A state semifinals.

The St. Joseph’s girls team, which made the state tournament for the third time in school history, were the third-ranked TAPPS 2A squad.
