BRENHAM — Ralph Kallie scored a touchdown with 31 seconds remaining and the Brenham defense played lights out in the second half to take down Magnolia West 27-23 in a raucous atmosphere Friday at Cub Stadium.

Brenham (3-1, 1-0 in District 20-5A) fell behind 20-7 at halftime of the district opener for both teams. The Cubs stiffened on defense in the second half to set up a comeback that sent the packed homecoming crowd into a frenzy.

Kallie scored his first touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run late in the third quarter to pull the Cubs to within six points. The teams traded punts and Magnolia West drove the field and had the ball inside the Brenham 10 early in the fourth quarter.

On 2nd-and-goal from the 8, Mustang quarterback John Matocha took a 7-yard sack. On the next play from the 15, Matocha threw a wheel route to Christian Price that was broken up by Brenham’s Darvis Watson in the end zone.

Magnolia West (3-1, 0-1) kicked a 32-yard field goal to take a 23-14 lead.

Brenham went three-and-out on its next possession and the Cubs’ punt was returned back into their own territory.

Magnolia West once again made a drive into the red zone. On a 3rd-and-goal from the 3, Matocha rolled right on a play-action pass and heaved the ball into the end zone. The ball was tipped around and landed into the arms of Brenham’s Devin Williams, who returned the interception 107 yards for a touchdown to cut the Mustang lead to 23-21.

Magnolia West had trouble moving the ball and was forced to punt after Brenham’s Terrell Nickerson sacked Matocha.

Brenham fumbled the ball on the ensuing possession but recovered under the pile. A slight skirmish broke out and a player from each team got ejected.

Brenham took over at the Magnolia West 40 with 2:51 remaining in the game. The Cubs used a pair of Kallie runs and a pass from Jacob Oehrlein to Tamarus McWilliams to set up a 4th-and-inches. Kallie plunged ahead for the first down and the Cubs got the ball at the 10 after another Magnolia West personal foul call.

After Kallie put the Cubs ahead 27-23 with 31 seconds left, the Mustangs went backwards after a sack by Nickerson on second down and a sack by Marqez Bimage to seal the game.

Kallie had 178 rushing yards on 26 carries and had one reception for 57 yards. Brenham quarterback Kendarin Ray scored on a 61-yard keeper up the middle for Brenham’s lone score in the first half.

Brenham travels to Waller next week to face the Bulldogs, which lost to Magnolia on Friday. Magnolia West will host Tomball Memorial.
