NAVASOTA — Navasota’s Tavarus Baker intercepted a pass in his own end zone with 18 seconds left to seal the Rattlers’ 10-7 victory over Stafford on Friday in District 12-4A Division I play at Rattler Stadium.
Navasota (4-4, 4-0) took a 3-0 lead on Miguel Alvarado’s 41-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. The Rattlers nursed it until Stafford (2-5, 2-1) broke through on J. Matthews’ 1-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter.
Navasota answered less than two minutes later on Darick Henderson’s 25-yard TD run to end the scoring, though Stafford drove deep into Rattler territory for the potential game-winning score until Baker’s game-sealing play.
Darius Randle led Navasota on the ground with 91 yards on 25 carries. Henderson had 52 yards on eight carries. La’Darrin Thomas caught six passes for 101 yards. They were the only completions of the night for Zack Dyer as both teams’ defenses dictated play. Navasota finished with 267 yards of total offense, while Stafford managed just 161.
Navasota will play at Houston Yates next Saturday, and Stafford will host Houston Furr.
