NEW WAVERLY — Leon scored a pair of touchdowns and shut out New Waverly in the second half, but the Bulldogs held on for a 23-20 win over the Cougars on Friday.
Leon quarterback Jacob Robinson threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Harris Sherrod early in the third and ran for a touchdown with under a minute left in the game to pull Leon within 23-20. Robinson finished 21-of-42 passing for 285 yards with two TDs and an interception. Sherrod had seven carries for 101 yards and six receptions for 72 yards, and Tyson Cornett added 11 catches for 172 yards and a TD.
Cornett also added an interception and a fumble recovery, and linebacker Brock Beamer recorded 20 tackles, including two for loss. Linebacker Curtis Stanford had 15 tackles, and Sherrod and Luis Guillen each had 10.
Leon (0-3) will play at Lovelady at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
