Rudder’s boys basketball team has several players who routinely make plays above the rim, and on Monday, the Rangers got a little national recognition for it.
Senior Ladarius Johnson’s put-back, two handed slam in Friday’s 80-48 win over Waco landed at No. 1 in USA Today’s rankings of the top five dunks from Texas high school basketball last week.
After a missed layup in transition, Johnson soared through the middle of the floor to corral the rebound and finish the dunk with two hands. He was second on the team with 14 points against Waco, with none coming with as much force as his put-back slam.
Johnson is averaging 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds this season for the Rangers (21-5, 4-2), who are in a three-way tie in District 18-5A with A&M Consolidated and College Station.
Teammates Josh Johnson and Antoine Henderson have also been known to put down heavy dunks from time-to-time this season, as they’ve helped Rudder crack in the TABC Class 5A Top 25 rankings several times this season.
The Rangers are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Temple.
