HOUSTON — Despite a late safety, Brenham hung on to beat Houston Heights 42-38 on Saturday in a nondistrict football game at Delmar Stadium.

Brenham quarterback Garrison Weiss made several big plays, but the Cubs dropped their season opener 38-13 to Magnolia West on Friday night.

BRENHAM — Chase Wheaton, who was an outfielder at Brenham, has been hired as the school’s head baseball coach. Wheaton spent last season at Pearland, going 22-8, including a 13-1 record in District 23-6A to win the league title by two games over Houston Strake Jesuit.

College Station senior Kendall Tramel and juniors Hailey Hudson and Brionna Warren were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 5A all-state softball team.

BRENHAM — The Brenham baseball team beat Rudder 9-0 on Tuesday in District 19-5A play. Rudder (5-14-1, 3-6) will host Brenham (18-10, 3-6) at 7 p.m. Friday.

SPRING — The College Station golf teams advanced to the regional tournament with the boys winning the team title and the girls placing second at the District 19-5A tournament Monday and Tuesday at Gleannloach Pines Golf Club.

Brenham and Caldwell are the lone Brazos Valley baseball teams ranked in this week’s Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s poll. The Cubs are third in Class 5A and Caldwell is sixth in 4A. College Station is receiving votes in 5A.

BRENHAM — Mackenzie Mitchell threw a complete-game two-hitter, and Lauren Herring hit a two-run single in the third inning to lead the A&M Consolidated softball team past Brenham 2-0 on Wednesday in District 19-5A action.

Jacqueline Culpepper scored in the first half off an assist from Molly Thompson, and the A&M Consolidated defense did the rest to lift the Lady Tigers past Brenham 1-0 on Tuesday in District 19-5A girls soccer at Tigerland Stadium.

BRENHAM — The Rudder boys basketball team held Brenham to just two first-quarter points and 11 in the first half, and the Rangers cruised to a 66-45 victory in District 19-5A play Tuesday.
