how Crime Stoppers Works...

• Crime Stoppers is not a part of any law enforcement agency.
1. Law enforcement provides Crime Stoppers with information about crimes they
believe that members of the community are likely to know something
about.
2. The media helps Crime Stoppers get that information out to
the citizens of Brazos County.
3. Citizens will hopefully remember something about what
they’ve seen or heard in regards to that crime, will give that
information to Crime Stoppers, and we pass that information on
to law enforcement
• What happens once a tip is received?
1. Tips come in to an internet-based page that lists the information
provided by the tipster.
2. The Crime Stoppers Law Enforcement Coordinator reviews the
tip and adds additional information law enforcement may need
about the suspect.
3. The Coordinator may ask the tipster (through the system, so the
tipster stays anonymous) for more information. Tipsters should check
back in periodically to see if there are any questions or information
from law enforcement.
4. The Coordinator sends the information to the appropriate law
enforcement.
5. If Law Enforcement has additional questions, those will be sent to the tipster
through the system and answers will be sent back the same way.
6. Law Enforcement will investigate and take action on the tip if possible. When they
have completed their works, they will provide information to the Coordinator about
what happened. The Coordinator will update the tip in the system as information is
received.
7. If the tip led to an arrest, the tipster will be notified through the system.
8. Sometimes this whole process takes longer than one would think.
• How Crime Stoppers can guarantee anonymity?
1. Your anonymity is protected by law; it is a crime for any Crime Stoppers employee
to give specific tip information to anyone who is not law enforcement personnel.
2. No matter how you send in your tip, Crime Stoppers does not collect any identifying
information.
a. We have no voice mail. We do have an answering service that only answers
Crime Stoppers calls so your calls can be answered 24-hours per day, 7 days
per week.

b. We do not have caller ID, so we don’t ever see your phone
number
c. Our computerized system does not collect IP addresses.
3. Each tip is given a unique TIP ID NUMBER, the tipster is
given that TIP ID NUMBER and a password associated with that
specific TIP ID NUMBER. It is the only way we can associate the
tipster with that tip, so if the tipster loses it, we can’t give them
credit for the tip.
4. THE ONLY WAY SOMEONE WILL KNOW IF YOU PROVIDED A TIP
IS IF THE YOU TELL THEM.
• How Tipsters are Paid Rewards
1. IF a tipster provides enough accurate
information that lead to an arrest, law enforcement
will notify the coordinator.
2. The Coordinator will tell the Crime Stoppers
Board of Directors, who must approve the reward.
Rewards are approved monthly.
3. The coordinator will notify the tipster via the online system (or
through the phone if the tipster calls).**REMEMBER**The tipster
MUST have the Tip-ID Number and password provided when the
tip was first submitted to receive any information about a reward.
4. The tipster will be given information about how and where to
pick up their reward along with a new, secret code to provide
to the bank. Only the bank, the tipster, and the Crime Stoppers

Coordinator have this information, so no one else can
pick up the reward.
5. The tipster will use the drive through so that no one
will see them or know they are picking up a reward.
They will not be asked any questions at the bank.
6. Funds for rewards come from Brazos County Adult
Probation Office and donations from organizations and
private citizens.
