Burleson County Sheriff Thomas Norsworthy has resigned from his position, and county commissioners are working to appoint an interim sheriff.

According to Burleson County Judge Keith Schroeder, Norsworthy, who was elected sheriff in late 2016 after Dale Stroud retired, submitted his resignation late last week. He cited personal reasons for his departure. The Burleson County Commissioners Court met Tuesday morning and accepted the resignation.

“I will tell you, it was unexpected,” Schroeder said. “He has been a part of the county for many years, and we have appreciated his service.”

Before becoming sheriff, Norsworthy was an investigator with the 21st District Attorney’s Office and had served as police chief in Caldwell.

Once an interim sheriff is selected by county commissioners, that person will fill the position until a new sheriff is elected in November 2020. For those hoping to run for sheriff, filing begins next month.
