A Washington County jury has convicted a Houston man of aggravated robbery in a purse-snatching at Wal-Mart in April 2018.

Eric Denzel Latin, 26, is scheduled to be sentenced after a hearing on Aug. 29, according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office. He could face up to 99 years or life in prison for the first-degree felony.

Officials said a passenger in a vehicle Latin was driving got out of the car and pulled the purse off of a woman who was loading groceries in her car while parked in a handicap parking space on April 29, 2018.

The passenger got back in the car after knocking the woman to the ground, and Latin drove off, officials said. A witness followed the car and called police, prosecutors said in a news release. Latin was arrested in Houston after a brief pursuit, officials said.

According to the news release, Latin testified during the trial that he didn't know a robbery was happening and he was already driving to Houston when he figured it out.

Prosecutors called Latin's testimony "absurd," and said security camera video proved otherwise.
