A full-service restaurant is coming to Easterwood Airport.

The general aviation terminal, built in the 1950s, will be remodeled to become the Gate 12 Bar and Grill, Cody Whitten of J. Cody’s said in an interview on WTAW Newstalk 1620 on Wednesday.

Gate 12 will be a steakhouse that features a dining room, bar and glass-front walls and outdoor seating to allow guests to watch planes come and go. The restaurant is projected to hire between 20 and 25 for staff and the facility will hold about 170 guests.

The history of Easterwood Airport will be featured in the restaurant, Whitten said, with photos of the wind tunnel and hangar facilities before the airport was built being featured.

Remodeling will being in October, with a hopeful opening date sometime in May 2020, he said.

Whitten said work has been done for the past six and a half months to secure the lease, which was signed Aug. 30. The restaurant is one of two private business agreements made during the Texas A&M System Board of Regents meeting on Aug. 9, with Brookshire Brothers being the other. The Texas A&M System broke ground on the West Campus project on Aug. 22.
