A Bryan man was arrested early Wednesday after police said he broke into a church and stole a Bible.

According to College Station police, around 11:30 p.m. authorities responded to Parkway Baptist Church on a burglary in progress call. Two church staff members had received mobile phone alerts that motion was caught on the church’s KOR Education School security cameras. The footage showed a man with baggy clothes and a backpack making his way through one of the buildings before leaving, police said.

Officers searched a wooded area behind the church and detained Lamont Orange, 28, of Bryan. Police said his clothes matched the clothes the man on camera was wearing.

A sweep of the building revealed the intruder searched through a desk and stole a Bible, ripping pages and using a soapy substance to plaster the pages onto security camera lenses. In Orange’s backpack, police said they found a bottle of body wash and a Bible missing several pages.

Orange is charged with burglary of a building, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in a state jail and $10,000 in fines. He remains in the Brazos County Jail on $5,000 bond.
