A Calvert man was arrested Wednesday on first-degree felony charges after authorities say he repeatedly molested a child in Bryan over a six-month period.

According to Bryan police, on April 8, a woman filed a report because her daughter said when Melvin Dwight Johnson, 50, of Calvert, would babysit her between 2016 and 2017 at the family’s Bryan apartment, he had molested her several times.

According to the police report, the girl told police when she would return home from school — she was in the third grade at the time — Johnson would molest her. He told the girl he would hurt her family if she told anyone, police said.

Police said Johnson initially said he had never been alone with the children, but later admitted he had served as their babysitter. He agreed to undergo a polygraph exam, but then refused to speak to police, authorities said. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody Wednesday.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison and $10,000 in fines. He is being held in the Brazos County Jail on $800,000 bond.

This is happening too often and to victims at a younger and younger age; 3rd to even 1st graders. Elected Judges on the benches, I challenge you to make examples of these perpetrators by handing out maximum sentences allowed by law. Registered voters, I challenge you to monitor these judges decisions and reflect it at the polls.
