Veterans Park

1,000 American flags — each 3 feet by 5 feet and flying on a 10-foot pole — are displayed in Veterans Park through Nov. 6 to Nov. 13, 2016.

The Eagle is seeking submissions for an upcoming special section that will pay tribute to area military veterans.

The special section, titled "Honoring our Veterans," will publish on Nov. 10, and showcase stories and photos highlighting area veterans and various conflicts.

There is no cost to submit a veteran's nomination. An online submission form is available at theeagle.com/veteransday.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 7.

Submissions must be of living military veterans representing any of the following U.S. service branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard.

Conflicts include World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Middle Eastern conflicts and others.

Veterans submitted will be included in an online photo gallery at theeagle.com. The gallery will include images of veterans and information about them.

From those submissions, several veterans will be chosen for feature-length profile stories to be showcased in the section.

The goal for the section is to fill it with compelling stories and a diverse group of veterans in terms of era, service branch, ethnicity, gender and rank.

For each submission, the veteran's name should be included, along with a current address, town they were from at the time of service, military branch, highest rank, years in service and overseas deployments.

Also, submissions should include two photos -- one of the veteran from service and a current one -- and 25 to 100 words describing why this person is worthy of tribute.

The special section is intended to be an attractive keepsake for readers of The Eagle. It also will include the story behind the national observance of Veterans Day and other features.

The Eagle is joining other news outlets across the BH Media Group family in participating in the project.
