A Bryan man was arrested this week in connection to an incident where a credit card was used while the owner was in jail.

According to Bryan police, in December 2018, a man filed a report and said while he was in the Brazos County Jail between 2016 and 2018, he learned debt collectors had been attempting to collect on an unpaid charge to one of his credit cards. The man said when he was arrested, he asked a friend, Leonard Henry McGruder, 57, to look after his personal belongings, including his wallet.

Police spoke with McGruder, who said the friend had given permission to use the credit card. Investigators reviewed the jail’s recorded phone calls between the victim and McGruder and noted none of the calls relayed permission to use the credit cards.

McGruder was arrested Wednesday on a charge of credit card abuse, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in a state jail and $10,000 in fines. He was released from the Brazos County Jail on $5,335 bond.
