Milam County prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a 30-year-old who is accused of killing a 20-month-old girl in Rockdale earlier this month.
Shawn Vincent Boniello -- who goes by Shayla Angelina Boniello and identifies as a woman -- was indicted Thursday morning on a capital murder charge, according to a press release from the Milam County District Attorney's Office.
An indictment by grand jury is not an indication of guilt. It means enough evidence exists for the case to proceed in the criminal justice process.
According to a probable cause statement, Boniello confessed to shaking, hitting and squeezing Patricia Ann "Annie" Rader on Dec. 3 in a Rockdale home. Upon receiving the indictment, the district attorney's office decided to seek the death penalty for Boniello. District Judge John Youngblood requested the Texas Capital Defender's Service in Austin to represent Boniello. No trial date has been announced.
