College Station School Board President Michael Schaefer announced Monday his candidacy to represent Brazos County as Precinct 1 commissioner.

Schaefer is in the final year of his second three-year term on the school board. He was first elected in 2014 and was named president of the board last month.

“I live among, and work with, the residents of Precinct 1, and I drive on its streets every day,” Schaefer said in a press release. “I understand my neighbors’ concerns and needs, and I’m prepared to work diligently to address the transportation and public safety issues we’re all facing.”

Schaefer will face incumbent Steve Aldrich in the Republican primary. As of Monday evening, Aldrich, who was sworn in as Precinct 1 commissioner on Jan. 1, 2017, was the only other person who has filed for the primary.
