A woman from the Flo community in Leon County was found dead in her home earlier this month following a house fire.

According to Leon County Sheriff Kevin Ellis, on the afternoon of Aug. 8, first responders with the Oakwood, Buffalo and Flo volunteer fire departments were dispatched to a mobile home on F.M. 831 between Flo and Oakwood. Officials found that the home’s interior was on fire, and the residence was filled with smoke. Though the home did not suffer significant structural damage, several areas in the structure had been damaged by either fire or smoke. Firefighters found the body of the home’s resident, 64-year-old Peggy JoAn Lathrop, inside.

Ellis said that an official cause of death has yet to be determined, though initial observation led first responders to believe she died from smoke inhalation. Her death and the fire are being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office. Foul play is not suspected.
