The man suspected of driving a car that crashed into a light pole early Sunday, injuring four people, has been charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Officers responding to the accident in the 2700 block of Osborn Lane around 2:30 a.m. Sunday said the car had major damage, and four passengers were taken to a hospital for serious injuries.

Police determined 27-year-old Joel Olvera Sr. had been driving, according to the police report, and lost control near the intersection of Osborn Lane and Braeswood Drive. The car spun multiple times before hitting the light pole, officers said in the report.

Olvera failed field sobriety tests, according to the police report.

He was being held in the Brazos County Jail; bail had not been set Sunday night.

Intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
