OPAS presents one-night-only ‘Cirque’ production

As a special treat for area residents, MSC OPAS has added a one-night performance of Cirque Mechanics 42 Ft — A Menagerie Of Mechanical Marvels at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in Rudder Auditorium. Tickets, available at the MSC Box Office or at www.MSCOPAS.org, are $10 for adults and $5 for elementary and secondary students. Aggies will be admitted free with a valid student ID. For more information, go to opas.tamu.edu.

Every time MSC OPAS brings one of the productions of Cirque du Soleil to the Texas A&M campus, audiences cheer and clap and have a grand time watching the amazing troupe of performers handle seemingly death-defying routines with what appears to be great ease.

About a month ago, OPAS opened its new season with Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, and those who were lucky enough to see it still are talking about it.

If you missed that show — or just can’t get enough Cirque — OPAS has a special treat for you. On Nov. 12 and for one night only, OPAS will present Cirque Mechanics 42 Ft — A Menagerie Of Mechanical Marvels in Rudder Auditorium.

The program begins at 7 p.m., earlier than other OPAS events. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Children 4 and younger will be admitted free, as will all Aggies with a student ID. Tickets are on sale now at the MSC Box Office on the first floor of Rudder Tower, by calling 979-845-1234 or online at www.MSCOPAS.org.

Parking will be available that evening in the University Center Garage across from the Rudder Complex, but unlike OPAS season performances, there will be a charge for parking.

The show pays tribute to the traditional performance circle in one-ring circuses. Developed by Cirque Mechanics, the 42 Ft — A menagerie of Mechanical Marvels will showcase a galloping metal mechanical horse, a rotating tent frame for circus staples such as strongmen, acrobats and aerialists.

Anne Black, executive director of OPAS, said, “We are bringing this excellent troupe in for school performances for local fifth graders as part of our education outreach program. In organizing the company’s visit here, we really wanted to make at least one performance available for the public as well. The producers were happy to work with us, and we are thrilled to add a performance of this inspiring program to our Tapestry season.”

The New York Times called Cirque Mechanics “engrossingly entertaining,” and “intelligently conceived and expertly executed.” The Omaha World-Herald praised the organization as “exceptional for the wit, whimsy and wonder.”

The OPAS education outreach program is made possible by the support of OPAS Encore!
