Mae Del Cowen was born in the Deanville community of Burleson County on May 4, 1929, and she remained there for her entire life. She was the youngest of four children born to Harmon and Olivia Gerland. Her childhood was in the midst of the Great Depression and from those experiences, she learned the value of hard work and to waste nothing. Even though those were hard years, she would admit that she might have been a little spoiled.
She met the love of her life J.D. and they were married February 12, 1947.
They spent their honey moon in New Mexico. Thus, began a marriage that lasted for 61 years until his death on December 7, 2008. To this union were born two sons, Bruce and Boyd.
The family became active members of St. John's Lutheran church in Deanville on July 19, 1953 at the same time that Bruce and Boyd were baptized. Mae Del and J. D. were enthusiastic supporters of the Luther League and spent many Sunday afternoons at volleyball tournaments at churches in surrounding communities supporting their sons and their friends.
Mae Del was foremost a wife, mother and grandmother. In the 1960's she began substituting at the Deanville Post Office and eventually was offered the job of postmaster – a job she never expected to obtain. She spent 29 years there before her retirement.
Her retirement years were spent antiquing with her sisters, traveling with her friends, and enjoying her grandchildren. She attended countless sporting events for her grandsons and was a major caregiver for her granddaughter. Later, she would be a major influence in the life of her great grandchildren.
Mae Del was a faithful volunteer at the Christian Care Center and Burleson-St. Joseph Hospital in Caldwell. She was also an active member of the Deanville Sons of Herman Lodge and Deanville Volunteer Fire Department.
Her last years were spent at Copperas Hollow Assisted Living Center in Caldwell and her final days in the Copperas Hollow Nursing Home prior to her last hospital stay. She will surely be missed by her family, friends, and the Deanville community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father-in-law, her sisters Grace and Rachel, her brother Buster, her husband J. D. and her youngest son, Boyd.
She is survived by her son Bruce (Kathy), granddaughter Janice (Landon), and grandsons, Chris (Emily), Jeff (Becky) and Matt (Dawn). She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; Rylee, Jude, Luke, Kelby, Kevyn, Cash, Gage, Lyla and Liam Cowen. Also surviving are her nephews Morris Schaefer (Joyce), Nick Columbetti (Kem) and her niece Olivia Ludwig (Larry).
