Paul was born in Old Washington, Texas on the 240-acre family farm on December 24th, 1925. While working the farm, Paul attended the Old Washington School, a one room schoolhouse. He and his brothers and sisters walked or rode their horses to school each day. Paul continued his education and graduated from Brenham High School in 1943. Upon graduation he was sent a draft notice but did not pass the physical, being told something was not quite right with his heart. Paul knew he wanted to serve his country so in March of 1944 he joined the Merchant Marines where the ship he was on made many, many trips back and forth from Europe to the United States carrying supplies. When the war came to a close, Paul continued working in the Merchant Marines until, upon landing in New York, his captain informed him the draft board was looking for him. Paul reported for his physical, thinking again he would not pass and that he could just go back to work, but the Army had other thoughts. As a result, Paul headed to Korea to help the Army build pontoon bridges over rivers that had to be crossed. Three years prior, Paul met Mavis Wehring, whom he married on April 22nd, 1953, shortly after his tour ended. He and Mavis were married 61 years.
Paul was happiest when his children and grandchildren came to visit. He loved to just sit and chat with them, catching up on everything going on in their lives. Paul was also a huge football fan, especially of the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. He also loved to watch the Texas A&M University football games and had season tickets to A&M baseball games, which he enjoyed so very much!
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis, his mother and dad, Olga and Paul Zuehlke Sr., his brothers - Bill and wife, Delores, Herman and wife, Melinda, Herbert and wife, Dorothy; his sisters - Lillian Zuehlke, Elsie and husband, Almot Sommerfeld, and Nelda and husband, Raymond Kunkel; and his son-in-law, Edward Childress. Survivors include his son, Darrell Zuehlke of Brookshire, TX; his daughter Carol Childress of Midlothian, TX; his son, Jimmy Zuehlke of Kyle, TX; and his daughter-in-law, Gillian Zuehlke of Brookshire, TX. His great-grandchildren are Ava Hodge, Eleanor Hodge, Jameson Hodge, Graham Hodge, Reagan Childress, Quinn Hodge, Wren Childress, and Nora Hodge.

Ola Jean "Jeannie" Howe Ward, 77, of Bryan, Texas, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2019, surrounded by her family. A graveside service for family will be held in College Station, Texas, with arrangements made by Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley to express gratitude for the care and comfort they provided in her final days.
Jeannie was born on August 31, 1942, in Nixon, Texas. She married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Ward, in Austin, Texas, in 1970. Together they raised three children, Bryan, Mark, and VeLisa, and traveled the country, living in Colorado, Florida, New York, and Virginia before returning to their home state of Texas.
Forever the inquisitive mind, Jeannie was a genealogist long before the internet was an option, traveling the country researching the people and places that formed her family's roots. She was a published poet, receiving national recognition from the National Library of Poetry in 1997 for the poem "The Fields of Home" that she wrote in honor of her husband. She remained an avid reader, researcher, and seeker of knowledge until her final days and leaves behind a legacy that will live on for many generations to come.
After attending business school in San Antonio, Jeannie enjoyed a long professional career. She served as the personal secretary for Mayor McAllister of San Antonio in the late 1960's when the city hosted the 1968 World's Fair and during the building of Hemisfair Park. She later worked for renowned South Texas businessman, Fausto Yturria, in Brownsville, and in the admissions office Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas. After retiring, she continued to contribute her time and share her wisdom as a volunteer at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.
Always the caring mother and grandmother, she is survived by daughter, VeLisa Ward Bayer, and her husband, Jason, of Bryan, Texas; son, Mark Ward, and his wife, Michele, of College Station, Texas; son, Bryan Ward, and his wife, Tammy of Linton, Indiana; grandchildren Haden Bayer, Avery Bayer, Jacob Ward, Ryan Ward, Jacqi Sutherd, and Brianna Chavis; and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents William and Velta Howe; her older brother, Bill Howe; her beloved cat, Maggie; and husband, Dick Ward, with whom she is now reunited as they celebrate their 50th anniversary — together again, listening to the classic country music they both loved.
"For Jean, Jean, roses are red. And all of the leaves have gone green. While the hills are ablaze with the moon's yellow haze. Come into my arms, bonnie Jean."
