Strathwell "S.W." Johnson, 100, of Shiro, died Thursday evening, May 23, 2019, at his home with his beloved wife and family at his side.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10:00 – 11:00 am Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Midway Baptist Church, Hwy 30 at FM 2620, in Shiro. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at the church. Interment will immediately follow in David Chapel Cemetery.
Strathwell was born July 22, 1918 in Groesbeck to William McKinley and Alberta Enge Johnson. He lived in California, Pennsylvania and Chicago. He married the love of his life and best friend, Henrietta Mims on August 3, 1946 and pledged to spend their lives together.
During his working years he worked as a chauffeur, welder, steel mill worker and lastly as a janitor for the Chicago Board of Education.
After retiring in 1982 he moved to Shiro and became very involved as a community volunteer with a number of organizations including the Grimes County Democratic Party, he served as a Texas Silver-Hair Legislature and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In 2000, Tenaska Frontier Partners, Ltd created the "Strathwell Johnson Community Service Scholarship" in his honor. So far there have been 143 students given scholarships totaling $ 106,500.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta M. Johnson of Shiro; his son Strathwell (Woody) Johnson, Jr., grandchildren, Keyerrah, Lamirra and Ahmad Johnson; great granddaughter, My'ale Johnson; numerous other relatives and a great number of friends.
