Otis Chandler, former publisher of the Los Angeles Times credited with rescuing his family's newspaper from mediocrity and establishing it as a nationally respected media voice, died Monday at his home in Ojai, Calif. He had Lewy body disease, a degenerative brain disorder. He was 78.

Thomas Jay Harris, who served as editor of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for more than 20 years, died Sunday in a Lubbock hospital. He was 87. Harris joined the paper in 1938, returned after World War II service and remained until he retired in 1994.
