Alice was born to Tom and Milady (Havel) Vajdak in Snook, Texas on January 17, 1930. She attended school in Beasley, Rogers and Caldwell Texas and was married to Alex Piwonka on July 4, 1948 by Reverend V.A Svrcek in Caldwell. They made their home in Caldwell until moving to Lockhart, Texas in the early 1950’s. The family moved back to Caldwell in August of 1956, where they owned and operated Piwonka’s Grocery until 1980. Alice’s hobbies included cooking, gardening, sewing and crafts, especially creating handmade Christmas tree ornaments. Family and friends always looked forward to her strudel, candies, pecan tarts and cookies during the holiday season. When her health still permitted, Alice enjoyed participating at the Czech Museum in Caldwell. She and Alex also enjoyed traveling and attending polka dances with friends. In spite of her travels and hobbies, she always stated her greatest joy was the time she spent with her two grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Franklin, her husband Alex, and son Harold. Survivors include her sister, Mary Owens of Caldwell; her daughter, Betty Johnson of Caldwell; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Linda Piwonka of Bryan; grandson, Nicholas Piwonka of College Station; granddaughter, Alexis Johnson Melton and husband Chris; and great-grandson, Zachery of Cypress, as well as nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Saint Mary’s Altar Society.
